Lost Legends of Route 66: Moriarty to Santa Rosa - The Santa Fe Cutoff

Date: May 20, 2026 Duration: 35m 5s
Route 66 in New Mexico is filled with abandoned roads, vintage motels, classic neon signs, forgotten roadside attractions, and hidden history - and this Randomland adventure explores one of the most legendary stretches of the Mother Road during the Route 66 Centennial era. We begin in Moriarty, New Mexico at the historic Sunset Motel - one of the last original family-owned Route 66 motels in the state - before visiting Sal Lucero’s restored Whiting Brothers gas station, one of the best surviving Route 66 stations anywhere in America, and get an appearance from the legend himself. Next we visit the legendary Archie Lewis Toy & Car Museum, where Archie’s son gives an update on the future of the collection and how visitors can still experience it during the 100th anniversary of Route 66. Out behind the museum sit original classic cars that have remained along the old Route 66 alignment for decades, frozen in time beside the Mother Road. Continuing east along the Santa Fe Cutoff, we stop at historic Cline’s Corners and compare what survives today to the isolated desert Route 66 stop that first appeared here in the 1930s. Then it’s on to Santa Rosa, New Mexico - home of the famous Blue Hole, the restored Pecos Theatre, historic Route 66 neon, abandoned motels, forgotten roadside sites, and some of the oldest surviving alignments of Route 66 in the Southwest. We search for the legendary Sun N Sand Motel sign, receive a private tour inside the beautifully restored Pecos Theatre, and then follow the original dirt Route 66 alignment near Blue Hole Road where hidden rock advertising billboards from the early days of Route 66 still survive out in the desert. From abandoned alignments and ghost signs to vintage neon and frozen roadside history, this is one of the most fascinating surviving stretches of Route 66 in New Mexico. 30:51 the first 1926, the pre-1930s alignment
30:51 the first 1926, the pre-1930s alignment of Route 66 ran right past the Blue
30:53 of Route 66 ran right past the Blue
30:53 of Route 66 ran right past the Blue Hole. And that portion of it, that
30:55 Hole. And that portion of it, that
30:55 Hole. And that portion of it, that pre-1937 portion of Route 66 runs out to
30:58 pre-1937 portion of Route 66 runs out to
30:58 pre-1937 portion of Route 66 runs out to the dirt, eventually dead ends into the
31:00 the dirt, eventually dead ends into the
31:00 the dirt, eventually dead ends into the airport where they built the runway
31:02 airport where they built the runway
31:02 airport where they built the runway right on the path of the old road. Stay
31:04 right on the path of the old road. Stay

31:06 away from the road. You don't want to go
31:06 away from the road. You don't want to go down that road. Yeah, anyway, you can go
31:08 down that road. Yeah, anyway, you can go
31:08 down that road. Yeah, anyway, you can go down it for a while, and then if you're
31:09 down it for a while, and then if you're
31:09 down it for a while, and then if you're really adventurous, you can go around
31:10 really adventurous, you can go around
31:10 really adventurous, you can go around the airport and continue on old, sort of
31:13 the airport and continue on old, sort of
31:13 the airport and continue on old, sort of lesser than fully paved Route 66 for
31:16 lesser than fully paved Route 66 for
31:16 lesser than fully paved Route 66 for quite a ways. Look at this, we turned

31:26 crazy thing is off this road, you can see there's like a a bit of a flat
31:28 see there's like a a bit of a flat
31:28 see there's like a a bit of a flat concrete piece on that boulder up there.
31:30 concrete piece on that boulder up there.
31:30 concrete piece on that boulder up there. Kind of hard to see through the bushes,
31:31 Kind of hard to see through the bushes,
