My Great Grandfather Died Here

Date: May 23, 2016 Duration: 31m 42s
Saint Louis, MO. I talk a lot about History, but as I leave the cemeteries and museums of Hannibal and head toward Saint Louis, I have an opportunity to shift from exploring America's history to exploring my own history. It's a little but of a diversion and one maybe not everyone will be interested in, but I'll take that risk because it means a lot to me. This is the emotionally surprising visit to a piece of a past long forgotten. Saint Louis' original little italy, the winfield train, some Clemens grave, and one very big gateway Arch http://livefastdiepoor.spreadshirt.com http://patreon.com/justinscarred

11:03 after I explained to them that my
11:03 after I explained to them that my great-grandfather died in there. I don't
11:04 great-grandfather died in there. I don't
11:04 great-grandfather died in there. I don't think they really liked that part of the
11:06 think they really liked that part of the
11:06 think they really liked that part of the story. Actually, thinking about it now,
11:08 story. Actually, thinking about it now,
11:08 story. Actually, thinking about it now, I don't like that part of the story. I
11:10 I don't like that part of the story. I
11:10 I don't like that part of the story. I mean, if my great-grandfather died, does

11:13 mean, if my great-grandfather died, does that mean that I could
11:15 that mean that I could
11:15 that mean that I could die? No. Honestly, in a lot of ways, I'm
11:18 die? No. Honestly, in a lot of ways, I'm
11:18 die? No. Honestly, in a lot of ways, I'm just happy that that house still exists
11:19 just happy that that house still exists
11:20 just happy that that house still exists because huge, vast chunks of St. Lewis
11:24 because huge, vast chunks of St. Lewis
11:24 because huge, vast chunks of St. Lewis are just total they look like a war
11:25 are just total they look like a war
11:25 are just total they look like a war zone. They're just bombed out looking
11:27 zone. They're just bombed out looking
11:27 zone. They're just bombed out looking buildings that have just been abandoned.
11:29 buildings that have just been abandoned.
11:29 buildings that have just been abandoned. This is one of those cities that used to
11:30 This is one of those cities that used to
11:30 This is one of those cities that used to have a very very massive population. But
11:33 have a very very massive population. But
11:33 have a very very massive population. But after World War II and the interstates
11:35 after World War II and the interstates
11:35 after World War II and the interstates and all the suburbs were invented, a lot
11:37 and all the suburbs were invented, a lot
11:37 and all the suburbs were invented, a lot of people were just like, "Why am I
11:38 of people were just like, "Why am I
11:38 of people were just like, "Why am I putting up with living in this city
11:40 putting up with living in this city
11:40 putting up with living in this city again and left and basically St. Louis
11:42 again and left and basically St. Louis
11:42 again and left and basically St. Louis went from this massive massive city with
11:44 went from this massive massive city with
11:44 went from this massive massive city with this big population to this tiny
11:47 this big population to this tiny
11:47 this big population to this tiny population and all these brick buildings
11:49 population and all these brick buildings
11:49 population and all these brick buildings just kind of went to seed." It's funny
11:51 just kind of went to seed." It's funny
11:51 just kind of went to seed." It's funny in a way because the interstate kind of
11:53 in a way because the interstate kind of
11:53 in a way because the interstate kind of helped to kill St. Louis and St. Louis
11:55 helped to kill St. Louis and St. Louis
11:55 helped to kill St. Louis and St. Louis is actually on Route 66. So, as much as
11:58 is actually on Route 66. So, as much as
11:58 is actually on Route 66. So, as much as the interstate is a great and wonderful
11:59 the interstate is a great and wonderful
11:59 the interstate is a great and wonderful thing and honestly makes doing what I'm
12:01 thing and honestly makes doing what I'm
12:02 thing and honestly makes doing what I'm doing possible, there does sort of seem
12:03 doing possible, there does sort of seem
12:03 doing possible, there does sort of seem to be an unintentional theme going on
12:05 to be an unintentional theme going on
12:05 to be an unintentional theme going on here. I am now looking for something
12:07 here. I am now looking for something
12:07 here. I am now looking for something that I'm pretty sure is long gone. Oh
12:09 that I'm pretty sure is long gone. Oh
12:10 that I'm pretty sure is long gone. Oh yeah, I'm too late. Right here on this

12:37 place not too long ago. So, it was
12:37 place not too long ago. So, it was standing until pretty recently, but it's
12:39 standing until pretty recently, but it's
12:39 standing until pretty recently, but it's now completely demolished. It's crazy.
12:42 now completely demolished. It's crazy.
12:42 now completely demolished. It's crazy. There's like nobody in this
12:43 There's like nobody in this
12:43 There's like nobody in this neighborhood. There's nothing here. But
12:44 neighborhood. There's nothing here. But
12:44 neighborhood. There's nothing here. But this was once like the middle of a
12:46 this was once like the middle of a
12:46 this was once like the middle of a thriving, crazy, packed city. Well, the
12:49 thriving, crazy, packed city. Well, the
12:49 thriving, crazy, packed city. Well, the building might be gone, but I can still

13:02 Now, it's a pile of trash lost to
13:02 Now, it's a pile of trash lost to history. Maybe not that interesting of a
13:04 history. Maybe not that interesting of a
13:04 history. Maybe not that interesting of a piece of history to other people, but
13:05 piece of history to other people, but
13:05 piece of history to other people, but right here, for me, I'm touching a piece
13:08 right here, for me, I'm touching a piece
13:08 right here, for me, I'm touching a piece of my history. So, for me, this is
13:10 of my history. So, for me, this is
13:10 of my history. So, for me, this is pretty cool. Someday there might be
13:11 pretty cool. Someday there might be

15:46 and uh used to be home to a German immigrant community. That was back in
15:48 immigrant community. That was back in
15:49 immigrant community. That was back in 1844. So this was an immigrant close
15:51 1844. So this was an immigrant close
15:51 1844. So this was an immigrant close packed in poor immigrant community in
15:55 packed in poor immigrant community in

16:16 authenticated miracle. I'm honestly not
16:16 authenticated miracle. I'm honestly not sure what the miracle is exactly, but
16:18 sure what the miracle is exactly, but
16:18 sure what the miracle is exactly, but the shrine of St. Joseph is pretty

28:29 like Bond villain pods that go up in the
28:29 like Bond villain pods that go up in the arch up to the top and you get out and
28:31 arch up to the top and you get out and
28:31 arch up to the top and you get out and you can like crawl on your knees and
28:32 you can like crawl on your knees and
28:32 you can like crawl on your knees and look out these little slit windows up
28:34 look out these little slit windows up
28:34 look out these little slit windows up there and the whole thing kind of sways
28:36 there and the whole thing kind of sways
28:36 there and the whole thing kind of sways in the breeze slightly. It is
28:38 in the breeze slightly. It is
28:38 in the breeze slightly. It is terrifying. The view from up top is
28:40 terrifying. The view from up top is
28:40 terrifying. The view from up top is pretty amazing though. Here, look
28:49 at See, it's kind of like this only only
28:49 at See, it's kind of like this only only a little higher. A little higher. But
28:50 a little higher. A little higher. But
28:50 a little higher. A little higher. But pretty much Oh, I'm just as scared
28:53 pretty much Oh, I'm just as scared
28:53 pretty much Oh, I'm just as scared actually being up there. Okay. Well,
28:55 actually being up there. Okay. Well,
28:55 actually being up there. Okay. Well, this arch is meant to represent the
28:57 this arch is meant to represent the
28:58 this arch is meant to represent the gateway to the west for all the settlers
28:59 gateway to the west for all the settlers
28:59 gateway to the west for all the settlers on the east coast. But for our purposes
29:02 on the east coast. But for our purposes
29:02 on the east coast. But for our purposes coming from the west coast going to the
29:04 coming from the west coast going to the
29:04 coming from the west coast going to the east, this is like our gateway to the
29:06 east, this is like our gateway to the
29:06 east, this is like our gateway to the east. So,
29:08 east. So,
29:08 east. So, symbolically, we've done it. We've done
29:10 symbolically, we've done it. We've done
29:10 symbolically, we've done it. We've done our duty. The Mississippi River's down
29:12 our duty. The Mississippi River's down
29:12 our duty. The Mississippi River's down there. I wish I could show it to you,
29:14 there. I wish I could show it to you,

29:16 but I mean, we saw it this morning in
29:16 but I mean, we saw it this morning in Hannibal. It's a bummer. I thought I
29:17 Hannibal. It's a bummer. I thought I
29:18 Hannibal. It's a bummer. I thought I could show you a more epic view of the
29:20 could show you a more epic view of the
29:20 could show you a more epic view of the arch, but things don't always go
29:22 arch, but things don't always go
29:22 arch, but things don't always go according to plan, I guess. I don't
29:24 according to plan, I guess. I don't
29:24 according to plan, I guess. I don't think this thing's going anywhere. So,
29:25 think this thing's going anywhere. So,
29:25 think this thing's going anywhere. So, it's not like we can't come back. I
29:26 it's not like we can't come back. I
29:26 it's not like we can't come back. I mean, I'm pretty sure it's made out of
29:28 mean, I'm pretty sure it's made out of
29:28 mean, I'm pretty sure it's made out of metal. Some sort of some sort of metal.
29:30 metal. Some sort of some sort of metal.
29:30 metal. Some sort of some sort of metal. I guess I guess that's it for now. We'll
29:32 I guess I guess that's it for now. We'll
29:32 I guess I guess that's it for now. We'll just have to come back to experience
29:34 just have to come back to experience
