Never Before Seen Gettysburg History - Film Festival Begins!
We’re back in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania - and this Randomland adventure begins in a way you don’t often see… the battlefield, completely shrouded in mist. From the quiet stillness of the fields to the towering Eternal Light Peace Memorial, Gettysburg feels frozen in time - peaceful, solemn, and heavy with history.
From there, we head into town, tying in the historic Dobbin House and tracing how Gettysburg’s story stretches beyond the Civil War and back into the Revolutionary War era. That connection comes into focus as we arrive at the Beyond the Battle Museum for the kickoff of the Gettysburg Film Festival - and the opening of a brand new exhibit: The Spirit of 1776.
Inside, we’re among the first to see artifacts that have never been publicly displayed before, including rare Revolutionary War items and flags flown over Gettysburg during the Confederate retreat, tied to the historic Fahnestock House and McMillan House. This is history that’s been hidden away - until now.
Along the way, we find a sneaky little coffee shop, spot our first Revolutionary War reenactors, and run into some familiar faces - including Tim Smith, Andrew Dalton (President of Gettysburg History), and American Battlefield trust historian Garry Adelman delivering a powerful, passionate lecture that brings the past vividly to life.
This is Gettysburg like you’ve never experienced it - where history isn’t just remembered… it’s revealed.
These adventures only happen because of you. old building and I sure hope so cuz I was told this morning that the building

was told this morning that the building

was told this morning that the building still exists. I was very confused

still exists. I was very confused

still exists. I was very confused walking around looking for a building
30:17
walking around looking for a building
30:18
walking around looking for a building that matched the shape of the one in

that matched the shape of the one in

that old photo. But let me go across the street and show you what I mean. First
30:22
street and show you what I mean. First
30:22
street and show you what I mean. First of all, we're definitely in the right
30:24
of all, we're definitely in the right
30:24
of all, we're definitely in the right place because you can see here on the
30:25
place because you can see here on the

place because you can see here on the sign there's a very same photograph
30:28
sign there's a very same photograph

pronouncing that correctly. I'm picturing like Fisto. Yeah,

picturing like Fisto. Yeah,
30:38
picturing like Fisto. Yeah, >> I don't want to get a uh text from Gary

wrong, but I was looking at the side of this building and can you see that? Can
30:45
this building and can you see that? Can
30:45
this building and can you see that? Can you see that sort of ghostly shape on
30:49
you see that sort of ghostly shape on
30:49
you see that sort of ghostly shape on the side of the bricks there? That shape
30:52
the side of the bricks there? That shape
30:52
the side of the bricks there? That shape perfectly corresponds to the shape of
30:55
perfectly corresponds to the shape of
30:55
perfectly corresponds to the shape of the original building, right down to the
30:59
the original building, right down to the
30:59
the original building, right down to the old slant of the roof. Can you see that?
31:01
old slant of the roof. Can you see that?
31:01
old slant of the roof. Can you see that? the older bricks kind of on the right
31:03
the older bricks kind of on the right
31:03
the older bricks kind of on the right and the newer bricks on the left and
31:05
and the newer bricks on the left and
31:05
and the newer bricks on the left and even the shape of the old chimney. You
31:09
even the shape of the old chimney. You
31:09
even the shape of the old chimney. You can kind of see the top of the old
31:10
can kind of see the top of the old
31:10
can kind of see the top of the old chimney there just below the roof line
31:13
chimney there just below the roof line
31:13
chimney there just below the roof line and then a more modern chimney built up
31:16
and then a more modern chimney built up
31:16
and then a more modern chimney built up on top of it to vent the smoke. That is
31:19
on top of it to vent the smoke. That is
31:19
on top of it to vent the smoke. That is incredible. If I see a completely
31:21
incredible. If I see a completely
31:21
incredible. If I see a completely different building, I automatically
31:22
different building, I automatically
31:22
different building, I automatically assume they just knocked the old one
31:24
assume they just knocked the old one
31:24
assume they just knocked the old one down and then built a new one. But then
31:26
down and then built a new one. But then
31:26
down and then built a new one. But then again, I guess back in the 1890s, why
31:28
again, I guess back in the 1890s, why
31:28
again, I guess back in the 1890s, why waste bricks? So you can see the ghostly
31:30
waste bricks? So you can see the ghostly
31:30
waste bricks? So you can see the ghostly outline of the old Fannistto building
31:34
outline of the old Fannistto building
31:34
outline of the old Fannistto building from the days of the battle right here.
31:38
from the days of the battle right here.
31:38
from the days of the battle right here. You could actually see a bunch of

You could actually see a bunch of
31:39
You could actually see a bunch of bricked up sections of maybe old doors
31:41
bricked up sections of maybe old doors
31:41
bricked up sections of maybe old doors on the bottom and old windows between
31:44
on the bottom and old windows between
31:44
on the bottom and old windows between the windows up there. That is
31:47
the windows up there. That is
31:47
the windows up there. That is incredible. So this is where that flag
31:50
incredible. So this is where that flag
31:50
incredible. So this is where that flag that we saw in the museum was flown as
31:53
that we saw in the museum was flown as
31:53
that we saw in the museum was flown as the rebels were retreating out of town.
31:54

definitely discoloration

McMillan family house still supposedly
34:58
McMillan family house still supposedly stands out there on Seminary Ridge out
35:00
stands out there on Seminary Ridge out
35:00
stands out there on Seminary Ridge out where the Confederates had their lines.
35:02
where the Confederates had their lines.
