Gettysburg: Battlefield, Town, & New History being uncovered
We’re BACK, in Gettysburg! A secret mission brings Randomland here for a full day of wandering, taking in as much of the battlefield and town as possible while we’re here.
Out on the Gettysburg Battlefield, we hit some of the most famous ground in American history, but also slow down for a closer look at two homes that were directly caught up in the fighting. The Abraham Trostle Farm sat in the middle of the Union artillery line during the battle, and still bears scars from heavy Confederate bombardment, while the George Weikert Farm became a major field hospital, where wounded soldiers were treated in the immediate aftermath of the fighting. These aren’t just old buildings, they were part of the battle itself.
We also trace part of the historic Lincoln Highway as it cuts through Gettysburg, one of America’s earliest cross-country roads, tying this small town into a much bigger national story. We wander into town - first to the Diamond, then a few classic stops for coffee, ice cream, and a little browsing, plus a visit to the David Wills House right in the square. From there, we check out Tillie Pierce’s old school and head over to the Hopkins House, where history is LITERALLY just being uncovered and restored. It’s revealing an important and often overlooked part of Gettysburg’s story - its free Black community, history thats literally been covered up for generations but will fill in an important gap in the Gettysburg story. What’s my secret mission in Gettysburg? That we reveal before heading back out for another glorious look at the ground

2:13
Civil War is something that's kind of
2:13
Civil War is something that's kind of hard to get into. A lot of moving pieces
2:15
hard to get into. A lot of moving pieces
2:15
hard to get into. A lot of moving pieces to the Civil War or any individual
2:17
to the Civil War or any individual
2:17
to the Civil War or any individual battle, right? Positions, troop
2:19
battle, right? Positions, troop
2:19
battle, right? Positions, troop movements. Even when you come out to
2:21
movements. Even when you come out to
2:21
movements. Even when you come out to places like this and see monuments and
2:22
places like this and see monuments and
2:22
places like this and see monuments and see markers where the men were standing
2:24
see markers where the men were standing
2:24
see markers where the men were standing during the battle and you wrap your head
2:26
during the battle and you wrap your head
2:26
during the battle and you wrap your head around individual battles, you're
2:27
around individual battles, you're
2:28
around individual battles, you're thinking, well, what's the broader
2:29
thinking, well, what's the broader
2:29
thinking, well, what's the broader significance in the war itself? It's a
2:31
significance in the war itself? It's a
2:31
significance in the war itself? It's a lot to learn, a lot to digest,
2:34
lot to learn, a lot to digest,
2:34
lot to learn, a lot to digest, especially since each battlefield has so
2:36
especially since each battlefield has so
2:36
especially since each battlefield has so many thousands and thousands of
2:38
many thousands and thousands of
2:38
many thousands and thousands of individual stories that took place
2:40
individual stories that took place
2:40
individual stories that took place during the days of fighting, so many
2:41
during the days of fighting, so many
2:41
during the days of fighting, so many men, so much history. It's just a lot.
2:44
men, so much history. It's just a lot.
2:44
men, so much history. It's just a lot. But now, that's exactly what I like
2:46
But now, that's exactly what I like
2:46
But now, that's exactly what I like about it. It's such a deep rabbit hole.
2:48
about it. It's such a deep rabbit hole.
2:48
about it. It's such a deep rabbit hole. You can never learn or discover it all.
2:51
You can never learn or discover it all.

Battle of Gettysburg itself, they've

done a little brick work here to keep this barn uh preserved, but there it is.

this barn uh preserved, but there it is.

Look at that hole up there. I find that

Look at that hole up there. I find that absolutely fascinating. I breeze by and

Pretty fascinating. I noticed there's a

Pretty fascinating. I noticed there's a little sign on there that says resident

little sign on there that says resident parking only. Believe some of the

parking only. Believe some of the

parking only. Believe some of the historic structures on the Gettysburg
7:35
historic structures on the Gettysburg
7:35
historic structures on the Gettysburg National Military Park Battlefield do
7:37
National Military Park Battlefield do
7:37
National Military Park Battlefield do get occupied by rangers or whoever. I

get occupied by rangers or whoever. I
7:39
get occupied by rangers or whoever. I was just thinking that'd be a pretty
7:40
was just thinking that'd be a pretty
7:40
was just thinking that'd be a pretty cool, but pretty spooky place to reside
7:44
cool, but pretty spooky place to reside
7:44
cool, but pretty spooky place to reside on the battlefield itself where so
7:47
on the battlefield itself where so
7:47
on the battlefield itself where so much trauma went down. Especially
7:49
much trauma went down. Especially
7:49
much trauma went down. Especially considering that every structure on the
7:51
considering that every structure on the
7:51
considering that every structure on the battlefield, whether during the battle
7:53
battlefield, whether during the battle
7:53
battlefield, whether during the battle or after, would have been turned into a
7:55
or after, would have been turned into a
7:55
or after, would have been turned into a sort of a makeshift hospital. You would
7:56
sort of a makeshift hospital. You would
7:56
sort of a makeshift hospital. You would have had people being pulled into these
7:59
have had people being pulled into these
7:59
have had people being pulled into these buildings during and afterwards just to
8:01
buildings during and afterwards just to
8:01
buildings during and afterwards just to get out of the sun if nothing else. See,
8:03
get out of the sun if nothing else. See,
8:03
get out of the sun if nothing else. See, each one of these places has got a story
8:06
each one of these places has got a story
8:06
each one of these places has got a story to tell about the battle, about the
8:07
to tell about the battle, about the
8:07
to tell about the battle, about the aftermath of the battle, about the
8:09
aftermath of the battle, about the
8:09
aftermath of the battle, about the families who lived in the houses here.
8:11
families who lived in the houses here.
8:11
families who lived in the houses here. And a well-versed Civil War historian or
8:13
And a well-versed Civil War historian or
8:13
And a well-versed Civil War historian or a licensed battlefield guide could
8:14
a licensed battlefield guide could
8:14
a licensed battlefield guide could probably tell us acres of stories
8:17
probably tell us acres of stories
8:17
probably tell us acres of stories about the Trostle House right here. Not
8:19
about the Trostle House right here. Not
8:19
about the Trostle House right here. Not just during the battle, July 1st through
8:21
just during the battle, July 1st through
8:21
just during the battle, July 1st through 3rd, 1863, but also the aftermath, also
8:25
3rd, 1863, but also the aftermath, also
8:25
3rd, 1863, but also the aftermath, also the events leading up. And just look at
8:28
the events leading up. And just look at
8:28
the events leading up. And just look at the surrounding country. Gettysburg is
8:29
the surrounding country. Gettysburg is
8:29
the surrounding country. Gettysburg is fascinating because it's got to be one
8:32
fascinating because it's got to be one
8:32
fascinating because it's got to be one of the best-preserved battlefields in
8:35
of the best-preserved battlefields in
8:35
of the best-preserved battlefields in the world. Just the story of its
8:36
the world. Just the story of its
8:36
the world. Just the story of its preservation as a historic military
8:40
preservation as a historic military
8:40
preservation as a historic military park. And of course acquiring all the
8:43
park. And of course acquiring all the
8:43
park. And of course acquiring all the land that you can now wander around and
8:45
land that you can now wander around and
8:45
land that you can now wander around and enjoy.
8:47
enjoy.
8:47
enjoy. That's a fascinating story in and of
8:48
That's a fascinating story in and of
8:48
That's a fascinating story in and of itself, much less the evolution of the
8:51
itself, much less the evolution of the
8:51
itself, much less the evolution of the battlefield as a destination for
8:53
battlefield as a destination for
8:53
battlefield as a destination for visitors. But what I was going to say is
8:55
visitors. But what I was going to say is
8:55
visitors. But what I was going to say is that
8:56
that
8:56
that I don't know if there's any other place
8:57
I don't know if there's any other place
8:57
I don't know if there's any other place like this that's absolutely massive.
8:59
like this that's absolutely massive.
8:59
like this that's absolutely massive. Like acres and acres, literally miles of
9:03
Like acres and acres, literally miles of
9:03
Like acres and acres, literally miles of preserved fields and woodland and

preserved fields and woodland and
9:07
preserved fields and woodland and buildings and war stories and monuments

buildings and war stories and monuments

buildings and war stories and monuments and memorials. You could literally spend

the rest of your life wandering around
9:14
the rest of your life wandering around this battlefield and discover new
9:16
this battlefield and discover new
9:16
this battlefield and discover new places, new nooks and crannies, go into
9:18
places, new nooks and crannies, go into

specific spots they refer to that still

specific spots they refer to that still haven't been found. What other places
9:27
haven't been found. What other places
9:27
haven't been found. What other places there like this where you can kind of
9:29
there like this where you can kind of
9:29
there like this where you can kind of wander around and have all the benefits
9:32
wander around and have all the benefits
9:32
wander around and have all the benefits and amenities of a national park, right?
9:33
and amenities of a national park, right?

could just picture I mean, if you've got an imagination wandering around here
9:50
an imagination wandering around here
9:50
an imagination wandering around here is epic cuz you can just picture
9:51
is epic cuz you can just picture
9:52
is epic cuz you can just picture soldiers crawling down to the creek
9:53
soldiers crawling down to the creek
9:54
soldiers crawling down to the creek trying to get a drink of water as

warm, sunny day. Temperature's probably like in the 70s.
10:07
Temperature's probably like in the 70s.
10:07
Temperature's probably like in the 70s. And the cool thing is I've never
10:09
And the cool thing is I've never
10:09
And the cool thing is I've never experienced Gettysburg like this
10:11
experienced Gettysburg like this
10:11
experienced Gettysburg like this when there still really aren't that many
10:12
when there still really aren't that many
10:12
when there still really aren't that many leaves on the trees. In fact, they're
10:14
leaves on the trees. In fact, they're
10:14
leaves on the trees. In fact, they're just starting to bud out. Can you see
10:16
just starting to bud out. Can you see
10:17
just starting to bud out. Can you see that? So, you can actually see a much
10:19
that? So, you can actually see a much
10:19
that? So, you can actually see a much greater distance than you can in the
10:20
greater distance than you can in the
10:20
greater distance than you can in the summer on the anniversaries of the
10:22
summer on the anniversaries of the

summer on the anniversaries of the battle themselves. Anyway, I wish I knew

battle themselves. Anyway, I wish I knew more about the Trostle House. To be
10:26
more about the Trostle House. To be

more about the Trostle House. To be fair, I wish I knew more about
10:27
fair, I wish I knew more about

everything. But, it's one spot I've
10:29
everything. But, it's one spot I've never really been up
10:31
never really been up
10:31
never really been up this close to. Every time I see a brick
10:33
this close to. Every time I see a brick
10:33
this close to. Every time I see a brick wall in Gettysburg, it looks old. I'm
10:35
wall in Gettysburg, it looks old. I'm
10:35
wall in Gettysburg, it looks old. I'm always looking out to see if I can see
10:38
always looking out to see if I can see
10:38
always looking out to see if I can see bullet damage. Well, this thing's so
10:39
bullet damage. Well, this thing's so
10:39
bullet damage. Well, this thing's so scarred up I wouldn't even know. Look at
10:42
scarred up I wouldn't even know. Look at
10:42
scarred up I wouldn't even know. Look at this. I love all these old fences,
10:45
this. I love all these old fences,

the trails, a little bridge over the creek down there, miles and miles worth

creek down there, miles and miles worth

creek down there, miles and miles worth of walking and exploring you can do. I
10:52
of walking and exploring you can do. I
10:52
of walking and exploring you can do. I can hear frogs down in the creek.
10:54
can hear frogs down in the creek.
10:54
can hear frogs down in the creek. This is incredible. For a kid from

feels glorious. I feel pretty jealous of whoever the resident is of the
11:05
of whoever the resident is of the
11:05
of whoever the resident is of the Trostle House right there cuz it must be

Trostle House right there cuz it must be

11:17
so you'd have this all to yourself.
11:17
so you'd have this all to yourself. Beautiful. Now, I could be wrong about
11:19
Beautiful. Now, I could be wrong about
11:19
Beautiful. Now, I could be wrong about this, but I believe the Abraham Trostle
11:21
this, but I believe the Abraham Trostle
11:21
this, but I believe the Abraham Trostle farm over here
11:23
farm over here
11:23
farm over here was the headquarters of Union General
11:25
was the headquarters of Union General
11:25
was the headquarters of Union General Dan Sickles. And I think he was standing
11:27
Dan Sickles. And I think he was standing
11:27
Dan Sickles. And I think he was standing near this barn
11:29
near this barn
11:29
near this barn when a cannonball hit his leg. Dan
11:31
when a cannonball hit his leg. Dan
11:31
when a cannonball hit his leg. Dan Sickles later had a funeral just for the
11:33
Sickles later had a funeral just for the
11:33
Sickles later had a funeral just for the leg, by the way. There are photos of
11:36
leg, by the way. There are photos of
11:36
leg, by the way. There are photos of this farm with just tons and tons of
11:39
this farm with just tons and tons of
11:39
this farm with just tons and tons of dead artillery horses all over the
11:41
dead artillery horses all over the

dead artillery horses all over the place. The crazy thing is, when the army

11:45
left, they left a lot of those dead
11:45
left, they left a lot of those dead horses and haphazardly buried bodies all
11:49
horses and haphazardly buried bodies all
11:49
horses and haphazardly buried bodies all over the place. So, there was quite a
11:50
over the place. So, there was quite a
11:50
over the place. So, there was quite a mess to clean up afterwards. 100 dead
11:53
mess to clean up afterwards. 100 dead
11:53
mess to clean up afterwards. 100 dead horses across the farm, at least 16 dead
11:56
horses across the farm, at least 16 dead
11:56
horses across the farm, at least 16 dead horses in the yard over here. Believe
11:58
horses in the yard over here. Believe
11:58
horses in the yard over here. Believe the family fled like right in the middle
12:00
the family fled like right in the middle
12:00
the family fled like right in the middle of the fight, and this is one of the
12:01
of the fight, and this is one of the
12:02
of the fight, and this is one of the places where they literally left food on
12:04
places where they literally left food on
12:04
places where they literally left food on the dining room table as they fled. Like
12:06
the dining room table as they fled. Like
12:06
the dining room table as they fled. Like many others in Gettysburg,
12:08
many others in Gettysburg,
12:08
many others in Gettysburg, they were not paid for damage done to

they were not paid for damage done to

they were not paid for damage done to their property by the rebels.

their property by the rebels.

their property by the rebels. Eventually, the farm was sold to the

Eventually, the farm was sold to the
12:14
Eventually, the farm was sold to the government in 1899, I think, and it's
12:17
government in 1899, I think, and it's
12:17
government in 1899, I think, and it's been part of preserving the battlefield
12:19
been part of preserving the battlefield
12:19
been part of preserving the battlefield ever since. I don't know exactly where
12:20
ever since. I don't know exactly where
12:20
ever since. I don't know exactly where Sickles leg was blown off. See, Civil

Sickles leg was blown off. See, Civil

War history sounds all dry and dusty and
12:25
War history sounds all dry and dusty and boring until you realize it's all about
12:26
boring until you realize it's all about

boring until you realize it's all about people's legs being blown off and
12:29
people's legs being blown off and
12:29
people's legs being blown off and funerals for a leg and the whole thing.
12:31
funerals for a leg and the whole thing.
12:31
funerals for a leg and the whole thing. But, it was somewhere near here.

13:17
here. There's a lot of ways to
13:17
here. There's a lot of ways to experience the Gettysburg battlefield.
13:20
experience the Gettysburg battlefield.
13:20
experience the Gettysburg battlefield. Now, look at this. Here's another old
13:21
Now, look at this. Here's another old
13:21
Now, look at this. Here's another old farmhouse. This would be the G. Weikert
13:24
farmhouse. This would be the G. Weikert
13:24
farmhouse. This would be the G. Weikert house. I hope I'm pronouncing that
13:26
house. I hope I'm pronouncing that
13:26
house. I hope I'm pronouncing that correctly. It's one of those things that
13:27
correctly. It's one of those things that
13:27
correctly. It's one of those things that you read in stories about the battle,
13:29
you read in stories about the battle,
13:29
you read in stories about the battle, but you never have to actually say or
13:31
but you never have to actually say or
13:31
but you never have to actually say or hear pronounced. It's the same situation
13:33
hear pronounced. It's the same situation
13:33
hear pronounced. It's the same situation over here where there's a little sign
13:34
over here where there's a little sign
13:34
over here where there's a little sign saying it's a private residence. So, I
13:36
saying it's a private residence. So, I
13:36
saying it's a private residence. So, I don't know if they're park rangers or
13:37
don't know if they're park rangers or
13:37
don't know if they're park rangers or who gets to live in these, but that's so
13:39
who gets to live in these, but that's so
13:39
who gets to live in these, but that's so awesome. Dude, George Weikert's farm
13:41
awesome. Dude, George Weikert's farm
13:41
awesome. Dude, George Weikert's farm down here is a mile south of the town of
13:44
down here is a mile south of the town of
13:44
down here is a mile south of the town of Gettysburg. You could actually see
13:46
Gettysburg. You could actually see
13:46
Gettysburg. You could actually see Little and Big Round Top over there
13:48
Little and Big Round Top over there
13:48
Little and Big Round Top over there where there was fighting during the
13:49
where there was fighting during the
13:49
where there was fighting during the battle. So, the battle lines stretch for
13:51
battle. So, the battle lines stretch for
13:51
battle. So, the battle lines stretch for well over a mile south of the town.
13:55
well over a mile south of the town.
13:55
well over a mile south of the town. That's not even including what's north
13:56
That's not even including what's north
13:56
That's not even including what's north of the town. These were massive armies.
13:59
of the town. These were massive armies.
13:59
of the town. These were massive armies. This was a massive battle. This is
14:01
This was a massive battle. This is

This was a massive battle. This is another place where the family had to

another place where the family had to
14:02
another place where the family had to flee because all of a sudden they were
14:04
flee because all of a sudden they were
14:04
flee because all of a sudden they were in the middle of one of the biggest
14:05
in the middle of one of the biggest
14:05
in the middle of one of the biggest battles of the Civil War. According to
14:07
battles of the Civil War. According to
14:07
battles of the Civil War. According to tradition, six men died in the parlor
14:10
tradition, six men died in the parlor
14:10
tradition, six men died in the parlor because it was turned into a
14:12
because it was turned into a
14:12
because it was turned into a makeshift field hospital during and
14:14
makeshift field hospital during and
14:14
makeshift field hospital during and after the battle. Obviously, it's
14:16
after the battle. Obviously, it's
14:16
after the battle. Obviously, it's undergone preservation work, but I
14:17
undergone preservation work, but I
14:17
undergone preservation work, but I believe this is the original house that
14:19
believe this is the original house that
14:19
believe this is the original house that was here in 1863.
14:21
was here in 1863.
14:21
was here in 1863. And if I'm remembering correctly, was
14:24
And if I'm remembering correctly, was
14:24
And if I'm remembering correctly, was purchased by veterans of the battle, I
14:27
purchased by veterans of the battle, I
14:27
purchased by veterans of the battle, I think
14:28
think
14:28
think from I don't even want to say, but I
14:30
from I don't even want to say, but I
14:30
from I don't even want to say, but I think from New Jersey. I really hope I'm
14:32
think from New Jersey. I really hope I'm
14:32
think from New Jersey. I really hope I'm not getting that wrong.
14:34
not getting that wrong.
14:34
not getting that wrong. So, you see veteran organizations would
14:36
So, you see veteran organizations would
14:36
So, you see veteran organizations would come and purchase
14:37
come and purchase
14:37
come and purchase uh different properties that they
14:38
uh different properties that they
14:38
uh different properties that they actually fought and their fellow
14:40
actually fought and their fellow
14:40
actually fought and their fellow comrades were wounded and died on,
14:43
comrades were wounded and died on,
14:43
comrades were wounded and died on, leading to that patchwork quilt that
14:45
leading to that patchwork quilt that
14:45
leading to that patchwork quilt that came together
14:47
came together
14:47
came together nowadays as the Gettysburg National
14:49
nowadays as the Gettysburg National
14:49
nowadays as the Gettysburg National Military Historic Park, National
14:51
Military Historic Park, National
14:51
Military Historic Park, National Military something like that. It's a lot
14:52
Military something like that. It's a lot
14:52
Military something like that. It's a lot of words in the title. So, for
14:53
of words in the title. So, for
14:53
of words in the title. So, for shorthand, if I say Gettysburg National
14:55
shorthand, if I say Gettysburg National
14:55
shorthand, if I say Gettysburg National Park, just know that I mean National
14:57
Park, just know that I mean National
14:57
Park, just know that I mean National Military Park or whatever. This is
14:58
Military Park or whatever. This is
14:59
Military Park or whatever. This is another one I've just never stopped and
15:00
another one I've just never stopped and
15:00
another one I've just never stopped and got out and got up close to it. Gosh, is
15:03
got out and got up close to it. Gosh, is
15:03
got out and got up close to it. Gosh, is it gorgeous. And when the trees don't
15:04
it gorgeous. And when the trees don't
15:04
it gorgeous. And when the trees don't have leaves on them like this,
15:06
have leaves on them like this,
15:06
have leaves on them like this, you could see right up to the top of
15:08
you could see right up to the top of
15:08
you could see right up to the top of Little Round Top up there. You can see
15:10
Little Round Top up there. You can see
15:10
Little Round Top up there. You can see all around the battlefield. I could see
15:12
all around the battlefield. I could see
15:13
all around the battlefield. I could see the Pennsylvania Monument back over
15:15
the Pennsylvania Monument back over
15:15
the Pennsylvania Monument back over there near to the high watermark of the
15:17
there near to the high watermark of the
15:17
there near to the high watermark of the rebellion we were talking about earlier.
15:19
rebellion we were talking about earlier.
15:19
rebellion we were talking about earlier. Once again, look across the road there.
15:21
Once again, look across the road there.
15:21
Once again, look across the road there. You can see all kinds of of trails here,
15:23
You can see all kinds of of trails here,
15:23
You can see all kinds of of trails here, bike trails, walking trails, horse
15:25
bike trails, walking trails, horse
15:25
bike trails, walking trails, horse trails. And up on the heights over
15:26
trails. And up on the heights over
15:26
trails. And up on the heights over there,
15:27
there,
15:27
there, I can actually see a monument
15:29
I can actually see a monument
15:29
I can actually see a monument I've never noticed before cuz it's just
15:31
I've never noticed before cuz it's just
15:31
I've never noticed before cuz it's just surrounded by trees most of the time.
15:32
surrounded by trees most of the time.
15:32
surrounded by trees most of the time. Just up there hidden on Sedgwick Avenue.
15:36
Just up there hidden on Sedgwick Avenue.
15:36
Just up there hidden on Sedgwick Avenue. I'm sure an expert would know exactly
15:37
I'm sure an expert would know exactly
15:37
I'm sure an expert would know exactly what that was without going over to look
15:38
what that was without going over to look
15:38
what that was without going over to look closer. It's kind of at the end of the
15:41
closer. It's kind of at the end of the
15:41
closer. It's kind of at the end of the one-way road coming down from the base
15:45
one-way road coming down from the base
15:45
one-way road coming down from the base of Little Round Top. It's interesting.
15:47
of Little Round Top. It's interesting.
15:47
of Little Round Top. It's interesting. Now, I grant you if you're used to
15:47
Now, I grant you if you're used to
15:48
Now, I grant you if you're used to seeing my episodes on Route 66 or
15:49
seeing my episodes on Route 66 or
15:49
seeing my episodes on Route 66 or Disneyland or Disney World or somewhere,
15:51
Disneyland or Disney World or somewhere,
15:51
Disneyland or Disney World or somewhere, you're probably thinking, "What? I don't
15:52
you're probably thinking, "What? I don't
15:52
you're probably thinking, "What? I don't even understand any of this." I know I'm
15:53
even understand any of this." I know I'm
15:53
even understand any of this." I know I'm not exactly giving you a big overview of
15:56
not exactly giving you a big overview of
15:56
not exactly giving you a big overview of the Gettysburg battles. But for those
15:58
the Gettysburg battles. But for those
15:58
the Gettysburg battles. But for those that are not familiar at all, basically
16:00
that are not familiar at all, basically
16:00
that are not familiar at all, basically in 1863,
16:02
in 1863,
16:02
in 1863, Robert E. Lee
16:03
Robert E. Lee
16:03
Robert E. Lee had the brilliant idea of invading the
16:05
had the brilliant idea of invading the
16:05
had the brilliant idea of invading the north, right? We'll take the fight up to
16:07
north, right? We'll take the fight up to
16:07
north, right? We'll take the fight up to the Yankees. Maybe that will get the
16:08
the Yankees. Maybe that will get the
16:08
the Yankees. Maybe that will get the Union dispirited. They'll quit fighting
16:11
Union dispirited. They'll quit fighting
16:11
Union dispirited. They'll quit fighting us. They'll sue for peace. No one really
16:13
us. They'll sue for peace. No one really
16:13
us. They'll sue for peace. No one really intended to fight in and around
16:15
intended to fight in and around
16:15
intended to fight in and around Gettysburg, but this is where all the
16:16
Gettysburg, but this is where all the
16:16
Gettysburg, but this is where all the roads in the area converge. The two
16:19
roads in the area converge. The two
16:19
roads in the area converge. The two armies quite literally ran into each
16:21
armies quite literally ran into each
16:21
armies quite literally ran into each other accidentally up here.
16:23
other accidentally up here.
16:23
other accidentally up here. And the largest battle of the Civil War
16:25
And the largest battle of the Civil War
16:25
And the largest battle of the Civil War was duked out
16:27
was duked out
16:27
was duked out on this land. And like I kind of
16:28
on this land. And like I kind of
16:28
on this land. And like I kind of mentioned, Robert E. Lee's gambit of
16:30
mentioned, Robert E. Lee's gambit of
16:30
mentioned, Robert E. Lee's gambit of sending all his troops across a mile of
16:31
sending all his troops across a mile of
16:31
sending all his troops across a mile of open fields
16:33
open fields
16:33
open fields did not work.
16:34
did not work.
16:34
did not work. This is where the rebellion was pushed
16:37
This is where the rebellion was pushed
16:37
This is where the rebellion was pushed back
16:38
back
16:38
back to the south and the Union was
16:40
to the south and the Union was
16:40
to the south and the Union was eventually saved. So, in the Eastern
16:42
eventually saved. So, in the Eastern
16:42
eventually saved. So, in the Eastern theater over here, this is kind of the
16:44
theater over here, this is kind of the
16:44
theater over here, this is kind of the turning point of the Civil War. But at
16:46
turning point of the Civil War. But at
16:46
turning point of the Civil War. But at the very same time, Ulysses S. Grant in
16:48
the very same time, Ulysses S. Grant in
16:48
the very same time, Ulysses S. Grant in the west
16:49
the west
16:49
the west was breaking through at Vicksburg,
16:51
was breaking through at Vicksburg,
16:51
was breaking through at Vicksburg, capturing Vicksburg, and opening up the
16:53
capturing Vicksburg, and opening up the
16:53
capturing Vicksburg, and opening up the Mississippi River.
16:55
Mississippi River.
16:55
Mississippi River. And so, in two theaters, the rebels were
16:57
And so, in two theaters, the rebels were
16:57
And so, in two theaters, the rebels were being defeated. There was still a while
16:59
being defeated. There was still a while
16:59
being defeated. There was still a while to go as far as the war was concerned,
17:01
to go as far as the war was concerned,
17:01
to go as far as the war was concerned, but this is one of the big turning
17:02
but this is one of the big turning
17:02
but this is one of the big turning points in American history here at
17:04
points in American history here at
17:04
points in American history here at Gettysburg. And if you want a primer,
17:05
Gettysburg. And if you want a primer,
17:06
Gettysburg. And if you want a primer, there's tons of documentaries, but I
17:07
there's tons of documentaries, but I
17:07
there's tons of documentaries, but I think the best thing is one of the
17:09
think the best thing is one of the
17:09
think the best thing is one of the episodes of Ken Burns' Civil War series
17:12
episodes of Ken Burns' Civil War series
17:12
episodes of Ken Burns' Civil War series that was on PBS. And actually, I believe
17:14
that was on PBS. And actually, I believe
17:14
that was on PBS. And actually, I believe Ken Burns is in town actually I know Ken
17:17
Ken Burns is in town actually I know Ken
17:17
Ken Burns is in town actually I know Ken Burns is in town right now in
17:18
Burns is in town right now in
17:19
Burns is in town right now in Gettysburg. So, maybe we'll get to see
17:20
Gettysburg. So, maybe we'll get to see
17:20
Gettysburg. So, maybe we'll get to see him, but more on that later. All right,
17:21
him, but more on that later. All right,
17:22
him, but more on that later. All right, Ally's still not ready, so I get to do
17:23
Ally's still not ready, so I get to do
17:23
Ally's still not ready, so I get to do one more thing that I really want to do.
17:25
one more thing that I really want to do.
17:25
one more thing that I really want to do. And that is drive all the way back
17:27
And that is drive all the way back
17:27
And that is drive all the way back around. A lot of one-way roads on the
17:29
around. A lot of one-way roads on the
17:29
around. A lot of one-way roads on the Gettysburg battlefield. A lot of loops
17:32
Gettysburg battlefield. A lot of loops
17:32
Gettysburg battlefield. A lot of loops to drive through and get up on Little
17:33
to drive through and get up on Little
17:33
to drive through and get up on Little Round Top itself. It's cool cuz back to
17:35
Round Top itself. It's cool cuz back to
17:35
Round Top itself. It's cool cuz back to that imagination thing I was talking
17:37
that imagination thing I was talking
17:37
that imagination thing I was talking about earlier. The more you learn
17:39
about earlier. The more you learn
17:39
about earlier. The more you learn about a battlefield like this, the more
17:41
about a battlefield like this, the more
17:41
about a battlefield like this, the more when you drive around you can kind of
17:42
when you drive around you can kind of
17:42
when you drive around you can kind of paint the scene with soldiers and cannon
17:45
paint the scene with soldiers and cannon
17:45
paint the scene with soldiers and cannon fire and
17:47
fire and
17:47
fire and just makes the landscape come alive.
17:49
just makes the landscape come alive.
17:49
just makes the landscape come alive. Wow, so to the right there, that's Round
17:50
Wow, so to the right there, that's Round
17:50
Wow, so to the right there, that's Round Top or Big Round Top. Little Round Top
17:53
Top or Big Round Top. Little Round Top
17:53
Top or Big Round Top. Little Round Top is just over there to the left. I can't
17:55
is just over there to the left. I can't
17:55
is just over there to the left. I can't believe how clear it looks
17:57
believe how clear it looks
17:57
believe how clear it looks from down here with all the trees like
17:59
from down here with all the trees like
17:59
from down here with all the trees like this. You can see why I want to get up
18:00
this. You can see why I want to get up
18:00
this. You can see why I want to get up there today. Side note, I've seen dozens
18:03
there today. Side note, I've seen dozens
18:03
there today. Side note, I've seen dozens and dozens of monuments and markers
18:05
and dozens of monuments and markers
18:05
and dozens of monuments and markers scattered around
18:07
scattered around
18:07
scattered around kind of deep back off the road in the
18:08
kind of deep back off the road in the
18:08
kind of deep back off the road in the woods that I've never seen before.
18:11
woods that I've never seen before.
18:11
woods that I've never seen before. Definitely highlights the benefit of
18:13
Definitely highlights the benefit of
18:13
Definitely highlights the benefit of coming here, turning all different
18:15
coming here, turning all different
18:15
coming here, turning all different seasons of the year.
18:17
seasons of the year.
18:17
seasons of the year. There's a lot hiding out here. A lot of
18:18
There's a lot hiding out here. A lot of
18:18
There's a lot hiding out here. A lot of history. Okay, here we are.
18:21
history. Okay, here we are.
18:21
history. Okay, here we are. The base of Little Round Top, the crack
18:23
The base of Little Round Top, the crack
18:23
The base of Little Round Top, the crack between Big and Little Round Top. You
18:25
between Big and Little Round Top. You
18:25
between Big and Little Round Top. You had the rebels up on Big Round Top and
18:28
had the rebels up on Big Round Top and
18:28
had the rebels up on Big Round Top and the Union soldiers on Little Round Top.
18:30
the Union soldiers on Little Round Top.
18:30
the Union soldiers on Little Round Top. And so, this of course was sort of the
18:33
And so, this of course was sort of the
18:33
And so, this of course was sort of the battle line right here. This is where
18:34
battle line right here. This is where
18:34
battle line right here. This is where the Union soldiers had to defend
18:37
the Union soldiers had to defend
18:37
the Union soldiers had to defend the extreme left of their line. Joshua
18:39
the extreme left of their line. Joshua
18:39
the extreme left of their line. Joshua Chamberlain and his Maine men, men from
18:42
Chamberlain and his Maine men, men from

18:45
Maine, the 20th Maine
18:45
Maine, the 20th Maine were protecting this very little hill
18:46
were protecting this very little hill
18:46
were protecting this very little hill right here
18:48
right here
18:48
right here where the Confederate soldiers were
18:49
where the Confederate soldiers were
18:49
where the Confederate soldiers were charging up. This is a big This is kind
18:50
charging up. This is a big This is kind
18:50
charging up. This is a big This is kind of the big pivotal scene in the movie
18:53
of the big pivotal scene in the movie
18:53
of the big pivotal scene in the movie Gettysburg, if you ever saw that. This
18:55
Gettysburg, if you ever saw that. This
18:55
Gettysburg, if you ever saw that. This is where they literally had to fix
18:57
is where they literally had to fix
18:57
is where they literally had to fix bayonets cuz they were running out of
18:59
bayonets cuz they were running out of
18:59
bayonets cuz they were running out of ammo and charge down on the Confederate
19:02
ammo and charge down on the Confederate
19:02
ammo and charge down on the Confederate soldiers that were making their way up
19:03
soldiers that were making their way up
19:03
soldiers that were making their way up this hill.
19:05
this hill.
19:05
this hill. It's actually where I met Garry Adelman,
19:07
It's actually where I met Garry Adelman,
19:07

26:43
Lincoln spent the night, like I just
26:43
Lincoln spent the night, like I just said, or like he just said, before he
26:45
said, or like he just said, before he
26:45
said, or like he just said, before he gave the Gettysburg Address. A lot of
26:47
gave the Gettysburg Address. A lot of
26:47
gave the Gettysburg Address. A lot of interesting stuff went on in the house
26:49
interesting stuff went on in the house
26:49
interesting stuff went on in the house that night. It's crazy. I mean, the
26:51
that night. It's crazy. I mean, the

I assume the basement. They had a lot of people stuffed in here. It was standing
27:00
people stuffed in here. It was standing
27:00
people stuffed in here. It was standing room only in town. No room at the inn
27:02
room only in town. No room at the inn
27:02
room only in town. No room at the inn for the dedication of the national

right here, and therefore the whole traffic circle in the diamond, is part
27:46
traffic circle in the diamond, is part
27:46
traffic circle in the diamond, is part of the Lincoln Highway. That's the first
27:48

out and uh shore it up and get ready to build the museum proper behind the

build the museum proper behind the

build the museum proper behind the house. So, it's all coming together
36:33
house. So, it's all coming together
36:33
house. So, it's all coming together right now and I just wanted to get eyes
36:35
right now and I just wanted to get eyes
36:35
right now and I just wanted to get eyes on it before it was a nice cleaned up
36:37
on it before it was a nice cleaned up

on it before it was a nice cleaned up museum right here. You can actually see
36:38
museum right here. You can actually see
36:38
museum right here. You can actually see the progress being made. I think some of
36:40
the progress being made. I think some of
36:40
the progress being made. I think some of the logs in the front here have had to
36:42
the logs in the front here have had to
36:42
the logs in the front here have had to be replaced, at least according to the
36:44
be replaced, at least according to the
36:44
be replaced, at least according to the friendly construction worker back here
36:46
friendly construction worker back here
36:46
friendly construction worker back here working on the house. Well, when I say
36:48
working on the house. Well, when I say
36:48
working on the house. Well, when I say replaced, obviously they are shaped
36:49
replaced, obviously they are shaped
36:49
replaced, obviously they are shaped exactly like the original logs they
36:52
exactly like the original logs they
36:52
exactly like the original logs they found underneath that were rotting away.
36:54
found underneath that were rotting away.
36:54
found underneath that were rotting away. There are still many original logs and
36:57
There are still many original logs and
36:57
There are still many original logs and beams in this house. They're literally
36:59
beams in this house. They're literally
36:59
beams in this house. They're literally still finding artifacts out here.
37:01
still finding artifacts out here.
37:01
still finding artifacts out here. Hundreds and hundreds of artifacts. And
37:03
Hundreds and hundreds of artifacts. And
37:03
Hundreds and hundreds of artifacts. And I was asking that fellow working along
37:04
I was asking that fellow working along
37:04
I was asking that fellow working along the side of the house if he's found any
37:05
the side of the house if he's found any
37:05
the side of the house if he's found any recently. He said yesterday they found a

recently. He said yesterday they found a
37:07
recently. He said yesterday they found a little bottle with a skull and
37:09
little bottle with a skull and
37:09
little bottle with a skull and crossbones that poison on it. So,
37:11
crossbones that poison on it. So,
37:11
crossbones that poison on it. So, they're still finding all kinds of stuff
37:13
they're still finding all kinds of stuff
37:13
they're still finding all kinds of stuff at the Hopkins House. You think about
37:14
at the Hopkins House. You think about
37:14
at the Hopkins House. You think about it, we're in 2026.
37:16
it, we're in 2026.
37:16
it, we're in 2026. So, we're not far from 2040, which means
37:18
So, we're not far from 2040, which means
37:18
So, we're not far from 2040, which means this house is nearly 200 years old. So,
37:22
this house is nearly 200 years old. So,
37:22
this house is nearly 200 years old. So, an incredibly
37:24
an incredibly

37:36
Civil War. It's a very rare piece of
37:36
Civil War. It's a very rare piece of America's story literally being
37:38
America's story literally being
37:38
America's story literally being uncovered right before our eyes. I just
37:41
uncovered right before our eyes. I just
37:41
uncovered right before our eyes. I just wanted to see that cuz with everything
37:43
wanted to see that cuz with everything
37:43
wanted to see that cuz with everything going on at the film festival, I didn't
37:44
going on at the film festival, I didn't
37:44
going on at the film festival, I didn't know if I'd get another chance. Oh,
37:45
know if I'd get another chance. Oh,
37:45
know if I'd get another chance. Oh, look, an Amazon truck. I wonder what the
37:47
look, an Amazon truck. I wonder what the
37:47
look, an Amazon truck. I wonder what the Hopkins family would think of that.
37:49
Hopkins family would think of that.
