Ghost Towns return to life on Route 66 : Halfway There
The farther east we travel along Route 66, the emptier the landscape becomes - but scattered across the high plains between Tucumcari and Texas are abandoned towns, lost roadside relics, forgotten dirt alignments, and surprising new restoration projects slowly bringing parts of the Mother Road back to life.
In this Randomland adventure, we leave Tucumcari, New Mexico and continue east along historic Route 66 toward the famous halfway point of the Mother Road in Adrian, Texas.
Along the way we pass through San Jon, New Mexico, exploring abandoned filling stations, old garages, forgotten cafes, bars, and weathered roadside ruins left behind after Interstate 40 bypassed the original highway.
We also stop to see the World’s Largest Flip-Flop beside Route 66 and meet one of the owners behind one of the strangest roadside attractions on the old road.
But then the real adventure begins.
Hunting for surviving 1926 dirt alignments of the nearly century-old original Route 66 near the Texas border, we follow crumbling roads, dead ends, abandoned bridges, and hidden workarounds across the plains searching for surviving pieces of the earliest days of America’s most famous highway.
The trail eventually leads us to Endee, New Mexico - one of the most remote and forgotten ghost towns on Route 66 - where we explore the isolated ruins of the famous “Modern Rest Rooms” building, forgotten roadside remnants, and flashback footage of Endee’s now-closed wooden bridges from nearly a decade earlier before access changed forever.
From there we cross the dirt road into Texas and arrive in Glenrio, the legendary ghost town sitting directly on the New Mexico / Texas border.
There we discover something almost unbelievable:
The iconic “First Stop in Texas / Last Stop in Texas” sign is actively being restored by Jason of Idle Hands Design Build. We get an up-close look at the restoration work in progress, learn the planned relighting timeline, and uncover new details about the future of the long-abandoned motel property behind the old gas station - a place now being quietly brought back to life by the owners of one of the most unexpected businesses ever to arrive along old Route 66.
Finally, racing incoming rainstorms and powerful Texas winds, we continue east toward Adrian, Texas - the exact halfway point of Route 66 between Chicago and Santa Monica.
We stop at The Bent Door Cafe, the legendary MidPoint Cafe, DreamMaker Station, and finally cross the halfway mark itself as we officially leave New Mexico behind and continue deeper into Route 66 Texas.
Ghost towns. Century-old dirt roads. Dead ends. Hidden alignments. Neon restorations. Windstorms. Forgotten history.
This is Route 66 between worlds - where the old road is beginning to live again.

can also see on bits of the sidewall that fell in that there was some
10:20
that fell in that there was some
10:20
that fell in that there was some some painting on it, so we would have
10:22
some painting on it, so we would have
10:22
some painting on it, so we would have had some clues as to what this building
10:25
had some clues as to what this building

entirely here over on the Texas side are
26:46
entirely here over on the Texas side are a couple of other famous buildings. I
26:49
a couple of other famous buildings. I
26:49
a couple of other famous buildings. I don't know the current status, but they
26:51
don't know the current status, but they
26:51
don't know the current status, but they were infamously owned by a guy who lives
26:52
were infamously owned by a guy who lives

were infamously owned by a guy who lives in this house back here. It's not super
26:54
in this house back here. It's not super
26:54
in this house back here. It's not super tourist friendly, so we're keeping a
26:55
tourist friendly, so we're keeping a
26:55
tourist friendly, so we're keeping a respectful distance. The old former
26:58
respectful distance. The old former

like it's in pretty good shape, like the
27:08
like it's in pretty good shape, like the bones are there. It would be amazing if
27:10
bones are there. It would be amazing if
27:10
bones are there. It would be amazing if that could become a roadside cafe again
27:12
that could become a roadside cafe again
27:12
that could become a roadside cafe again one day. Same thing with the Texaco
27:14
one day. Same thing with the Texaco
27:14
one day. Same thing with the Texaco station, because that is an iconic
27:16
station, because that is an iconic
27:16
station, because that is an iconic roofline right there. Still intact,
27:18
roofline right there. Still intact,
27:18
roofline right there. Still intact, still with the old Coke cooler out in
27:20
still with the old Coke cooler out in
27:20
still with the old Coke cooler out in front, the old fridge. Not getting any
27:21
front, the old fridge. Not getting any
27:21
front, the old fridge. Not getting any closer, cuz you don't want to trespass
27:23
closer, cuz you don't want to trespass
27:23
closer, cuz you don't want to trespass in Texas. They take the law into their
27:24

27:26
own hands here. But man, wouldn't it be
27:26
own hands here. But man, wouldn't it be cool to own something like this and fix
27:29
cool to own something like this and fix
27:29
cool to own something like this and fix it all back up? It is absolutely
27:32
it all back up? It is absolutely
27:32
it all back up? It is absolutely amazing. All right, we're going to keep
27:33
amazing. All right, we're going to keep
27:33
amazing. All right, we're going to keep on cruising down the road. We're just
27:35
on cruising down the road. We're just
27:35
on cruising down the road. We're just going to run smack back into the
27:36
going to run smack back into the
27:36
going to run smack back into the interstate up here, because we want to

27:41
storm. We have almost hit a very
27:41
storm. We have almost hit a very important milestone on Route 66, because
27:44
important milestone on Route 66, because
27:44
important milestone on Route 66, because just ahead, just ahead of us down the
27:46
just ahead, just ahead of us down the
27:46
just ahead, just ahead of us down the freeway, is a little town that marks the
27:49

27:53
halfway point, mileage-wise, on the old

Texas, where there's more cows and windmills than people, in the little
28:07

28:10
town of Adrian. Woo, we had a little bit
28:10
town of Adrian. Woo, we had a little bit of rain here.
28:12
of rain here.
28:12
of rain here. Just going to wait for that to pass as
28:13
Just going to wait for that to pass as
28:13
Just going to wait for that to pass as we pull up into town. Probably a wise
28:15
we pull up into town. Probably a wise
28:15
we pull up into town. Probably a wise choice, as this place was once destroyed
28:17
choice, as this place was once destroyed

choice, as this place was once destroyed by a tornado, but that is not actually
28:19
by a tornado, but that is not actually
28:19
by a tornado, but that is not actually what makes Adrian famous. It's got
28:21
what makes Adrian famous. It's got
