Route 66 in New Mexico - Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Rattlesnakes

Date: May 18, 2026 Duration: 40m 30s
Historic Route 66 through New Mexico once took travelers on a strange detour north into Santa Fe - and in this Randomland adventure we follow that forgotten alignment from Albuquerque to Santa Fe before heading back down the famous Santa Fe Cutoff toward Moriarty. We begin in Albuquerque at one of the strangest spots on the Mother Road - where Route 66 literally crosses Route 66. From there we head into historic Old Town Albuquerque to wander the plaza, explore the adobe streets, and visit one of the city’s weirdest and most legendary attractions: the American International Rattlesnake Museum. Inside, we get a private tour from founder Bob Myers and come face to face with one of the largest collections of live rattlesnakes in the world while learning the bizarre history behind this famous Route 66 roadside attraction. Then it’s north into the mountains toward Santa Fe, New Mexico - the wealthy, artistic, strange, and famously swanky city that once sat directly on Route 66 before travelers eventually bypassed it using the Santa Fe Cutoff. Before entering downtown Santa Fe, we stop at the legendary El Rey Court, one of the most beautiful and historic Route 66 motor courts anywhere in the Southwest. From there we explore the Santa Fe Plaza, La Fonda on the Plaza, old adobe streets, historic architecture, and the unusual atmosphere that makes Santa Fe unlike anywhere else on the Mother Road. We also visit the exterior of the legendary San Miguel Chapel - often called the oldest church in the United States - along with the mysterious Oldest House before finally heading south down the historic Santa Fe Cutoff toward Moriarty, New Mexico. The adventure ends beneath the glowing neon lights of a classic Route 66 motel as another unforgettable day on America’s Mother Road comes to a close. This is Route 66 through New Mexico at its most historic, atmospheric, bizarre, and unforgettable. 33:30 they do have this bronze donkey right
33:30 they do have this bronze donkey right here and I'm assuming that this is where
33:32 here and I'm assuming that this is where
33:32 here and I'm assuming that this is where there was a some kind of historical
33:34 there was a some kind of historical
33:34 there was a some kind of historical information about that, but it is it is
33:35 information about that, but it is it is
33:35 information about that, but it is it is blank. It's a literal blank slate. We
33:38 blank. It's a literal blank slate. We
33:38 blank. It's a literal blank slate. We can rewrite history. Oh my gosh, what
33:40 can rewrite history. Oh my gosh, what

33:44 escaping the apothecary cafe. Anyway, I
33:44 escaping the apothecary cafe. Anyway, I do like the Southwest vibe, right? Like
33:47 do like the Southwest vibe, right? Like
33:47 do like the Southwest vibe, right? Like I am into it. I'm absolutely fascinated
33:49 I am into it. I'm absolutely fascinated
33:49 I am into it. I'm absolutely fascinated by all forms of American history and it
33:51 by all forms of American history and it
33:51 by all forms of American history and it doesn't get more American history than
33:53 doesn't get more American history than
33:53 doesn't get more American history than the history of the Native Americans,
33:56 the history of the Native Americans,
33:56 the history of the Native Americans, right? And then of course you have the
33:57 right? And then of course you have the
33:57 right? And then of course you have the Spanish and Mexican colonial history and
34:00 Spanish and Mexican colonial history and
34:00 Spanish and Mexican colonial history and then the English and United States
34:02 then the English and United States
34:02 then the English and United States colonial history and the Southwest is
34:04 colonial history and the Southwest is
34:04 colonial history and the Southwest is where they all kind of collide together,
34:07 where they all kind of collide together,
34:07 where they all kind of collide together, right? It's not just cowboy stuff.
34:08 right? It's not just cowboy stuff.
34:08 right? It's not just cowboy stuff. Although there is plenty of cowboy stuff
34:10 Although there is plenty of cowboy stuff
34:10 Although there is plenty of cowboy stuff out here as well. It's this amazing mix
34:12 out here as well. It's this amazing mix
34:12 out here as well. It's this amazing mix of the history of empires, the history
34:14 of the history of empires, the history
34:14 of the history of empires, the history of indigenous people, and the history of
34:17 of indigenous people, and the history of
34:17 of indigenous people, and the history of technologies. Of course, 100 years ago,
34:20 technologies. Of course, 100 years ago,
34:20 technologies. Of course, 100 years ago, the new high-tech thing was the American
34:23 the new high-tech thing was the American
34:23 the new high-tech thing was the American paved road and the numbered interlinked
34:27 paved road and the numbered interlinked
34:27 paved road and the numbered interlinked US highway system, Route 66, which cut
34:30 US highway system, Route 66, which cut
34:30 US highway system, Route 66, which cut right through the heart of the
34:32 right through the heart of the
34:32 right through the heart of the historical landscape. And now, instead
34:34 historical landscape. And now, instead
34:34 historical landscape. And now, instead of being that newfangled technological
34:37 of being that newfangled technological
34:37 of being that newfangled technological highway coming through town, has reached
34:39 highway coming through town, has reached
34:39 highway coming through town, has reached the age of 100 years old. It's existed
34:41 the age of 100 years old. It's existed
34:41 the age of 100 years old. It's existed for a quarter of Santa Fe's history. And
34:43 for a quarter of Santa Fe's history. And
34:43 for a quarter of Santa Fe's history. And so, now even in Santa Fe, they've got to
34:46 so, now even in Santa Fe, they've got to
34:46 so, now even in Santa Fe, they've got to say, "Oh, yeah. It's been here for a
34:47 say, "Oh, yeah. It's been here for a
34:47 say, "Oh, yeah. It's been here for a while." All right, we're tired. We have
34:49 while." All right, we're tired. We have
34:49 while." All right, we're tired. We have a long way to go yet. I do want to come
34:50 a long way to go yet. I do want to come
34:50 a long way to go yet. I do want to come back to Santa Fe sometime and get deeper
34:53 back to Santa Fe sometime and get deeper
34:53 back to Santa Fe sometime and get deeper into the history. But mainly today, I
34:55 into the history. But mainly today, I
34:55 into the history. But mainly today, I just wanted to make sure that London got
34:56 just wanted to make sure that London got
34:56 just wanted to make sure that London got to see it and then by extension, of
34:58 to see it and then by extension, of
34:58 to see it and then by extension, of course, you guys got to see it with me.
34:59 course, you guys got to see it with me.
34:59 course, you guys got to see it with me. This is sort of our cheat code way of
35:01 This is sort of our cheat code way of
35:01 This is sort of our cheat code way of doing both routes of Route 66. Ooh, but
35:04 doing both routes of Route 66. Ooh, but
35:04 doing both routes of Route 66. Ooh, but real quick, before we leave the city of
35:05 real quick, before we leave the city of
35:05 real quick, before we leave the city of Santa Fe entirely, there's just two more
35:07 Santa Fe entirely, there's just two more
35:07 Santa Fe entirely, there's just two more spots we got to look at as the sun goes
35:09 spots we got to look at as the sun goes
35:09 spots we got to look at as the sun goes down in the west. And then we're going
35:11 down in the west. And then we're going
35:11 down in the west. And then we're going to be going hardcore Route 66 all the
35:14 to be going hardcore Route 66 all the
35:14 to be going hardcore Route 66 all the way to Chicago. Teased them earlier and
35:16 way to Chicago. Teased them earlier and
35:16 way to Chicago. Teased them earlier and we did film in them about 10 years ago
35:18 we did film in them about 10 years ago
35:18 we did film in them about 10 years ago or so. It is this, the oldest house in
35:21 or so. It is this, the oldest house in
35:21 or so. It is this, the oldest house in the USA. Literally right across the
35:23 the USA. Literally right across the
35:23 the USA. Literally right across the street from it, the San Miguel Mission
35:26 street from it, the San Miguel Mission
35:26 street from it, the San Miguel Mission or the oldest church in the USA, which
35:29 or the oldest church in the USA, which
35:29 or the oldest church in the USA, which was also started, I believe, back in
35:31 was also started, I believe, back in
35:31 was also started, I believe, back in 1610.
35:33 1610.
35:33 1610. So, a 400-year-old
35:35 So, a 400-year-old
35:35 So, a 400-year-old church, which I know you Europeans are
35:36 church, which I know you Europeans are
35:36 church, which I know you Europeans are laughing, but for us Americans, that's
35:38 laughing, but for us Americans, that's
35:38 laughing, but for us Americans, that's impressive. It was obviously built using
35:40 impressive. It was obviously built using
35:40 impressive. It was obviously built using Native American labor and the Pueblo
35:42 Native American labor and the Pueblo
35:42 Native American labor and the Pueblo Revolt actually burned it down, but a
35:44 Revolt actually burned it down, but a
35:44 Revolt actually burned it down, but a new roof was added 1694
35:46 new roof was added 1694
35:46 new roof was added 1694 and it's been going basically ever
35:49 and it's been going basically ever
35:49 and it's been going basically ever since, either being repaired or being
35:51 since, either being repaired or being
35:51 since, either being repaired or being used as a church, which is kind of
35:53 used as a church, which is kind of
35:53 used as a church, which is kind of amazing. Now, there are still Pueblos
35:55 amazing. Now, there are still Pueblos
35:55 amazing. Now, there are still Pueblos in, you know, even in New Mexico that
35:57 in, you know, even in New Mexico that
35:58 in, you know, even in New Mexico that are older than this church and older
35:59 are older than this church and older
35:59 are older than this church and older than this house over here. So, are they
36:00 than this house over here. So, are they
36:00 than this house over here. So, are they really the oldest house? Plus, I know in
36:03 really the oldest house? Plus, I know in
36:03 really the oldest house? Plus, I know in St. Augustine, Florida, there are some
36:04 St. Augustine, Florida, there are some
36:04 St. Augustine, Florida, there are some other early Spanish buildings that like
36:06 other early Spanish buildings that like
36:06 other early Spanish buildings that like to argue for the title of what's oldest
36:08 to argue for the title of what's oldest
36:08 to argue for the title of what's oldest and some of their historians like, "Ah,
36:10 and some of their historians like, "Ah,
36:10 and some of their historians like, "Ah, well, they actually really didn't use it
36:11 well, they actually really didn't use it
36:11 well, they actually really didn't use it in this year and this, you know." Well,
36:13 in this year and this, you know." Well,
36:13 in this year and this, you know." Well, let scholars and actually people from
36:15 let scholars and actually people from
36:16 let scholars and actually people from forums argue that out, but for our
36:18 forums argue that out, but for our
36:18 forums argue that out, but for our purposes now on Route 66, this is the
36:20 purposes now on Route 66, this is the
36:20 purposes now on Route 66, this is the oldest house in America or at least the
36:21 oldest house in America or at least the
36:21 oldest house in America or at least the oldest house on the route. There's sort
36:24 oldest house on the route. There's sort
36:24 oldest house on the route. There's sort of like the more museum and gift shop
36:25 of like the more museum and gift shop
36:25 of like the more museum and gift shop part and then this is the actual oldest
36:27 part and then this is the actual oldest
36:27 part and then this is the actual oldest house right here with these old ancient
36:29 house right here with these old ancient
36:29 house right here with these old ancient Adobe walls dating back to I think what
36:31 Adobe walls dating back to I think what
36:31 Adobe walls dating back to I think what at the 1640s when it comes to the oldest
36:33 at the 1640s when it comes to the oldest
36:33 at the 1640s when it comes to the oldest house. Just in front of the San Miguel
36:36 house. Just in front of the San Miguel
36:36 house. Just in front of the San Miguel Church and by extension just in front of
36:38 Church and by extension just in front of
36:38 Church and by extension just in front of the oldest house, this is actually the
36:40 the oldest house, this is actually the
36:40 the oldest house, this is actually the oldest alignment, the 1926 alignment of
36:43 oldest alignment, the 1926 alignment of
36:43 oldest alignment, the 1926 alignment of Route 66 right here cuz this is also the
36:47 Route 66 right here cuz this is also the
36:47 Route 66 right here cuz this is also the old Santa Fe Trail. Right here where
36:51 old Santa Fe Trail. Right here where
36:51 old Santa Fe Trail. Right here where we're standing. You can see that Route
36:52 we're standing. You can see that Route
36:52 we're standing. You can see that Route 66 Centennial flag right up there on the
36:55 66 Centennial flag right up there on the
36:55 66 Centennial flag right up there on the pole. And what amazing timing
36:58 pole. And what amazing timing
36:58 pole. And what amazing timing to be out here right when
37:00 to be out here right when
37:00 to be out here right when they're ringing the bells.
37:02 they're ringing the bells.
37:02 they're ringing the bells. Wait a minute.
37:03 Wait a minute.
37:03 Wait a minute. For whom the bell tolls?

37:09 bell is tolling for us because our
37:09 bell is tolling for us because our mission to the mission and up to Santa
37:11 mission to the mission and up to Santa
37:11 mission to the mission and up to Santa Fe is over for the day. And now London,
37:14 Fe is over for the day. And now London,
37:14 Fe is over for the day. And now London, who's very impressed, right at London?
37:15 who's very impressed, right at London?
37:16 who's very impressed, right at London? You're very impressed. On a scale of 1
37:17 You're very impressed. On a scale of 1
37:17 You're very impressed. On a scale of 1 to 10, how impressed are you?
37:19 to 10, how impressed are you?
37:19 to 10, how impressed are you? >> It's old.
37:21 >> It's old.
37:21 >> It's old. >> [laughter]
37:21 >> [laughter] >> And now London and I are going to
37:25 >> And now London and I are going to
37:25 >> And now London and I are going to I'm going to leave Santa Fe and the
37:27 I'm going to leave Santa Fe and the
37:27 I'm going to leave Santa Fe and the things that are old and cut down between
37:30 things that are old and cut down between
37:30 things that are old and cut down between the original alignment of Route 66 to
37:32 the original alignment of Route 66 to
37:32 the original alignment of Route 66 to things that are less old, the post-1937
37:36 things that are less old, the post-1937
37:36 things that are less old, the post-1937 part of Route 66. So, we're going to get
37:38 part of Route 66. So, we're going to get
37:38 part of Route 66. So, we're going to get on the highway and I'll show you where

37:44 Route 66 motel. Got to tell you, it's
37:44 Route 66 motel. Got to tell you, it's kind of cool for a nerd like me to be
37:45 kind of cool for a nerd like me to be
37:45 kind of cool for a nerd like me to be driving around up here cuz the first
37:47 driving around up here cuz the first
37:47 driving around up here cuz the first part of our journey out here, we're on
37:49 part of our journey out here, we're on
37:49 part of our journey out here, we're on the old Santa Fe and the old Pecos
37:51 the old Santa Fe and the old Pecos
37:51 the old Santa Fe and the old Pecos Trail. And then of course we're going to
37:53 Trail. And then of course we're going to
37:53 Trail. And then of course we're going to more modern highways making our way down
37:56 more modern highways making our way down
37:56 more modern highways making our way down to Moriarty. Well, that wasn't a very
37:58 to Moriarty. Well, that wasn't a very
37:58 to Moriarty. Well, that wasn't a very far drive, only about an hour, but it
38:00 far drive, only about an hour, but it
38:00 far drive, only about an hour, but it was one of those hours where the last
38:01 was one of those hours where the last
38:01 was one of those hours where the last half an hour of it feels like 10 hours
38:03 half an hour of it feels like 10 hours
38:03 half an hour of it feels like 10 hours and then it feels like 12 hours and the
38:05 and then it feels like 12 hours and the
38:05 and then it feels like 12 hours and the last minute felt pretty long. But we did
38:07 last minute felt pretty long. But we did
38:07 last minute felt pretty long. But we did eventually find old Route 66 again and
38:10 eventually find old Route 66 again and
