International Tiki Marketplace : Going Full Tiki at Don The Beachcomber
When we visited Oceanic Arts, we thought we had learned a thing or two about the incredible Tiki culture of the past. Little did we know that Tiki is alive and well! Once every six weeks or so, people in Hawaiian shirts and Vintage dresses descend on Don the Beachcomber's in Huntington/Sunset Beach, CA and go full Tiki for the International Tiki Marketplace.
Modeled after the original Don the Beachcomber's International Marketplace in Waikiki, the International Tiki Marketplace is a laid back, friendly, and welcoming gathering of everyone interested in Mid Century Modern, Tiki, Kitsch, and American Populuxe culture.
The venue, Don the Beachcomber, is an endangered species. One of only a few of the great "tike temples" of yesteryear, it has survived the shifting sands of pop culture to the present day. Originally known as Sam's Seafood, followed by a short stint as "Kona," it was purchased by Art & Delia Snyder who resurrected the spirit of the original "Don the Beachcomber." While Art has sadly passed away and big developers wait at the edge of the property like a barbarian horde, the spirit of the Backyard Luau is still alive and well in the huge "Hidden Village" area behind the restaurant.
Well into it's third year, the International Tiki Marketplace not only helps keep the doors open and Lapu Lapu cocktails flowing at Don the Beachcombers, but it has become the penultimate regular gathering of fun-loving fans of all things Exotic. There are a ton of vendors, but unlike a flea market or a swap meet, many of the items here are handmade, one-of-a-kind art pieces created by enthusiastic down-to-earth people from all walks of life. Vintage items and limited edition collectibles, art prints, Disneyana, Live Music, good drinks, and new friends are found in spades at the international Tiki Marketplace. So let's get in our virtual 60s coupes, put on our virtual Hawaiian shirts, and explore the vintage vibes of one of the greatest Tiki gatherings on the west coast!
