Pirates Attacked Orange County (1818) | Full Documentary

Date: April 24, 2026 Duration: 1h 16m
Pirates attacked Orange County, California in 1818 - and this is the true story of the San Juan Capistrano raid. This full documentary explores the real pirate attack on Mission San Juan Capistrano, Dana Point (San Juan Bay), and Trabuco Canyon during the raid led by Hippolyte Bouchard, also known as Hipólito Bouchard, one of the only pirates to ever attack California. In 1818, Argentine corsair Hippolyte Bouchard sailed into Dana Point Harbor, landed a crew of international sailors, and marched inland to Mission San Juan Capistrano. The mission was evacuated to Trabuco Ranch, and what followed was a real pirate raid on Orange County, California during the final years of Spanish rule in Alta California. This video is filmed entirely on location at the real sites of the attack: (San Juan Bay pirate landing, Mission San Juan Capistrano, Los Ríos Historic District, and the Trabuco Adobe ruins in Trabuco Canyon. Topics covered in this documentary include: Hippolyte Bouchard, Hipólito Bouchard, pirates in California, pirate attack on Orange County, Mission San Juan Capistrano history, Dana Point history, Alta California, Spanish California, La Argentina ship, Santa Rosa corvette, Trabuco Adobe, Los Ríos Street, San Juan Capistrano raid 1818, and the only real pirate invasion of Orange County. This is the true story of pirates in California - not legend, not Disneyland, but a documented historical event. Want to keep Randomland alive and thriving? 12:53 control over this territory. And then of course there was the financial side.
12:56 course there was the financial side.
12:56 course there was the financial side. They were hoping to create agricultural

13:04 become independent, creating economic opportunities out here, business

13:06 opportunities out here, business opportunities, and then luring more

13:13 make a whole lot of money for the Spanish empire. Now was this a good mix,
13:15 Spanish empire. Now was this a good mix,
13:15 Spanish empire. Now was this a good mix, mixing government control with faith,
13:17 mixing government control with faith,
13:17 mixing government control with faith, with the economy? Probably not. I think

13:55 heck of a temple, Ryan. Here, they were
13:55 heck of a temple, Ryan. Here, they were taking the faith pretty seriously, but
13:57 taking the faith pretty seriously, but
13:57 taking the faith pretty seriously, but the Spanish governors and entrepreneurs,
13:59 the Spanish governors and entrepreneurs,
13:59 the Spanish governors and entrepreneurs, they were very much interested in the
14:01 they were very much interested in the
14:01 they were very much interested in the financial side. Again, a weird mix or we
14:03 financial side. Again, a weird mix or we
14:03 financial side. Again, a weird mix or we would consider it so today, but that was
14:06 would consider it so today, but that was
14:06 would consider it so today, but that was the reality. So, besides the spiritual
14:08 the reality. So, besides the spiritual
14:09 the reality. So, besides the spiritual endeavors, the spiritual purpose of the
14:11 endeavors, the spiritual purpose of the
14:11 endeavors, the spiritual purpose of the mission, they had all the Native
14:12 mission, they had all the Native

14:15 Americans out here farming and growing
14:15 Americans out here farming and growing crops, raising horses and livestock. And
14:18 crops, raising horses and livestock. And
14:18 crops, raising horses and livestock. And probably the biggest thing economically
14:20 probably the biggest thing economically
14:20 probably the biggest thing economically speaking was cattle. We're talking about
14:22 speaking was cattle. We're talking about
14:22 speaking was cattle. We're talking about thousands and thousands and thousands of

14:29 missions. But, they also had things like
14:29 missions. But, they also had things like vineyards to produce wine. They had
14:32 vineyards to produce wine. They had
14:32 vineyards to produce wine. They had olive trees to make olive oil.
14:34 olive trees to make olive oil.
14:34 olive trees to make olive oil. Basically, anything and everything you
14:35 Basically, anything and everything you
14:35 Basically, anything and everything you needed to plant civilization along the
14:37 needed to plant civilization along the
14:38 needed to plant civilization along the Pacific coast over here. All right. Now,
14:39 Pacific coast over here. All right. Now,
14:39 Pacific coast over here. All right. Now, speaking of the Native American
14:41 speaking of the Native American
14:41 speaking of the Native American population of San Juan Capistrano, and
14:43 population of San Juan Capistrano, and
14:43 population of San Juan Capistrano, and this is the important part. The padres
14:45 this is the important part. The padres
14:45 this is the important part. The padres here were in charge of a thousand
14:48 here were in charge of a thousand
14:48 here were in charge of a thousand Acjachemen people or Juaneño Indians as
14:51 Acjachemen people or Juaneño Indians as
14:51 Acjachemen people or Juaneño Indians as they would have called them then. 1,000
14:54 they would have called them then. 1,000
14:54 they would have called them then. 1,000 neophytes or converts to the faith.
14:57 neophytes or converts to the faith.
14:57 neophytes or converts to the faith. Again, we don't have time to get into
14:58 Again, we don't have time to get into
14:58 Again, we don't have time to get into the nitty-gritty, the right and wrong of
15:00 the nitty-gritty, the right and wrong of
15:00 the nitty-gritty, the right and wrong of it all, but basically the ideal was they
15:02 it all, but basically the ideal was they
15:02 it all, but basically the ideal was they would convert a Native American, they
15:03 would convert a Native American, they
15:03 would convert a Native American, they would join voluntarily the mission
15:06 would join voluntarily the mission
15:06 would join voluntarily the mission system. They live here and work here for
15:08 system. They live here and work here for
15:08 system. They live here and work here for about 10 years with no option to leave,
15:10 about 10 years with no option to leave,
15:10 about 10 years with no option to leave, become thoroughly {quote} {unquote}
15:11 become thoroughly {quote} {unquote}
15:11 become thoroughly {quote} {unquote} civilized, and then join or assimilate
15:14 civilized, and then join or assimilate
15:14 civilized, and then join or assimilate into the sort of European population
15:17 into the sort of European population
15:17 into the sort of European population here. Now, in practice, although that
15:18 here. Now, in practice, although that
15:18 here. Now, in practice, although that worked a little bit, it never really
15:20 worked a little bit, it never really
15:20 worked a little bit, it never really worked out the way the Spanish intended,
15:23 worked out the way the Spanish intended,
15:23 worked out the way the Spanish intended, but again, that's beyond the scope of
15:24 but again, that's beyond the scope of
15:24 but again, that's beyond the scope of this particular episode. The important
15:26 this particular episode. The important
15:26 this particular episode. The important part is that there were about a thousand
15:29 part is that there were about a thousand
15:29 part is that there were about a thousand Native Americans living in and around
15:31 Native Americans living in and around
15:31 Native Americans living in and around the mission that were part of the
15:33 the mission that were part of the
15:33 the mission that were part of the mission itself. And then in terms of the
15:34 mission itself. And then in terms of the
15:34 mission itself. And then in terms of the Spanish or the Europeans at the mission,
15:36 Spanish or the Europeans at the mission,
15:36 Spanish or the Europeans at the mission, there was a handful of soldiers that
15:38 there was a handful of soldiers that
15:38 there was a handful of soldiers that were never all here at any given time.
15:40 were never all here at any given time.
15:41 were never all here at any given time. Maybe 10 guys tops spread throughout the
15:43 Maybe 10 guys tops spread throughout the
15:43 Maybe 10 guys tops spread throughout the region who theoretically lived here at
15:45 region who theoretically lived here at
15:45 region who theoretically lived here at the mission in some barracks that I'll
15:46 the mission in some barracks that I'll
15:46 the mission in some barracks that I'll show you in a little while. And then
15:48 show you in a little while. And then
15:48 show you in a little while. And then maybe 25 to 30 civilians working for,
15:52 maybe 25 to 30 civilians working for,
15:52 maybe 25 to 30 civilians working for, in, or around the mission who built up
15:54 in, or around the mission who built up
15:54 in, or around the mission who built up their own little properties and houses
15:56 their own little properties and houses
15:56 their own little properties and houses outside the mission walls in the town
15:59 outside the mission walls in the town
15:59 outside the mission walls in the town out here, which is now the Los Rios
16:00 out here, which is now the Los Rios
16:00 out here, which is now the Los Rios Historic District and sort of the plaza
16:02 Historic District and sort of the plaza
16:02 Historic District and sort of the plaza in front of the mission at the time
16:03 in front of the mission at the time
16:03 in front of the mission at the time we're talking about in pretty simple
16:05 we're talking about in pretty simple
16:05 we're talking about in pretty simple adobe buildings with wooden roofs or
16:08 adobe buildings with wooden roofs or
16:08 adobe buildings with wooden roofs or even in some cases some very simple
16:09 even in some cases some very simple
16:09 even in some cases some very simple wooden buildings. And then of course you
16:11 wooden buildings. And then of course you
16:11 wooden buildings. And then of course you had two padres here, two fathers, two
16:13 had two padres here, two fathers, two
16:13 had two padres here, two fathers, two priests, Jose Barona and Jeronimo
16:16 priests, Jose Barona and Jeronimo
16:16 priests, Jose Barona and Jeronimo Boscana. Now, it should go without
16:17 Boscana. Now, it should go without
16:18 Boscana. Now, it should go without saying, but I'm going to say it anyways,
16:19 saying, but I'm going to say it anyways,
16:19 saying, but I'm going to say it anyways, that the native population of the
16:21 that the native population of the
16:21 that the native population of the mission system was not allowed to be
16:23 mission system was not allowed to be
16:23 mission system was not allowed to be armed. And we're talking about a
16:25 armed. And we're talking about a
16:25 armed. And we're talking about a generation or so after the establishment
16:27 generation or so after the establishment
16:28 generation or so after the establishment of the mission, in some cases maybe even
16:29 of the mission, in some cases maybe even
16:29 of the mission, in some cases maybe even two or three generations down the line.
16:31 two or three generations down the line.
16:31 two or three generations down the line. So, the Acjachemen here were not armed.
16:34 So, the Acjachemen here were not armed.
16:34 So, the Acjachemen here were not armed. So, when you take into account that the
16:36 So, when you take into account that the
16:36 So, when you take into account that the priests were not going to fight any
16:37 priests were not going to fight any
16:37 priests were not going to fight any battles, the total population of the
16:39 battles, the total population of the
16:39 battles, the total population of the town, men, women, and children was about
16:41 town, men, women, and children was about
16:41 town, men, women, and children was about 30 people. And the native population was
16:43 30 people. And the native population was
16:43 30 people. And the native population was neither equipped nor trained to do any
16:45 neither equipped nor trained to do any
16:45 neither equipped nor trained to do any fighting. You're talking about maybe a
16:47 fighting. You're talking about maybe a
16:47 fighting. You're talking about maybe a total possible defense force of around
16:50 total possible defense force of around
16:50 total possible defense force of around 10 or 15 guys from the mission itself,
16:52 10 or 15 guys from the mission itself,
16:52 10 or 15 guys from the mission itself, which is pretty much nothing against the
16:54 which is pretty much nothing against the
16:54 which is pretty much nothing against the more than 300 guys Bouchard had in his
16:57 more than 300 guys Bouchard had in his
16:57 more than 300 guys Bouchard had in his combined two ships. Now, one of the
16:59 combined two ships. Now, one of the
16:59 combined two ships. Now, one of the first buildings you see when you enter
17:01 first buildings you see when you enter
17:01 first buildings you see when you enter the mission from the south side is this
17:03 the mission from the south side is this
17:03 the mission from the south side is this right here. This would have been the
17:05 right here. This would have been the
17:05 right here. This would have been the barracks for the soldiers here at San
17:07 barracks for the soldiers here at San
17:07 barracks for the soldiers here at San Juan Capistrano. I've always known that,
17:09 Juan Capistrano. I've always known that,
17:09 Juan Capistrano. I've always known that, but I always assumed that meant there
17:10 but I always assumed that meant there
17:10 but I always assumed that meant there were 20, 30, 40 soldiers, not 10 at the
17:13 were 20, 30, 40 soldiers, not 10 at the
17:13 were 20, 30, 40 soldiers, not 10 at the most. Some of the sources I've seen
17:15 most. Some of the sources I've seen
17:15 most. Some of the sources I've seen while I was researching this video say
17:16 while I was researching this video say
17:16 while I was researching this video say maybe three or four soldiers at any
17:18 maybe three or four soldiers at any
17:18 maybe three or four soldiers at any given time. And when we actually enter
17:20 given time. And when we actually enter
17:20 given time. And when we actually enter the barracks building today, you can see
17:23 the barracks building today, you can see
17:23 the barracks building today, you can see some depictions of what those soldiers
17:25 some depictions of what those soldiers
17:25 some depictions of what those soldiers would have looked like. They were
17:27 would have looked like. They were
17:27 would have looked like. They were leather jacket soldiers, meaning they
17:29 leather jacket soldiers, meaning they
17:29 leather jacket soldiers, meaning they were wearing leather armor, not that
17:31 were wearing leather armor, not that
17:31 were wearing leather armor, not that metal conquistador stuff that we think
17:33 metal conquistador stuff that we think
17:33 metal conquistador stuff that we think of when we're thinking of the Spanish
17:34 of when we're thinking of the Spanish
17:34 of when we're thinking of the Spanish soldado de cuera.
17:36 soldado de cuera.
17:36 soldado de cuera. Leather jacket soldiers. As you can see,
17:38 Leather jacket soldiers. As you can see,
17:39 Leather jacket soldiers. As you can see, they lived pretty simply in here. This
17:41 they lived pretty simply in here. This
17:41 they lived pretty simply in here. This is not a very big chamber. Although,
17:43 is not a very big chamber. Although,
17:43 is not a very big chamber. Although, like I said, I thought maybe 30 or 40
17:45 like I said, I thought maybe 30 or 40
17:45 like I said, I thought maybe 30 or 40 guys lived in here because you have room
17:47 guys lived in here because you have room
17:47 guys lived in here because you have room for plenty of bunks, but I guess at the
17:50 for plenty of bunks, but I guess at the
17:50 for plenty of bunks, but I guess at the time there were not that many soldiers
17:52 time there were not that many soldiers
17:52 time there were not that many soldiers dedicated to this particular mission.
17:54 dedicated to this particular mission.
17:54 dedicated to this particular mission. So, you would think that if there was
17:55 So, you would think that if there was
17:55 So, you would think that if there was even the remotest possibility
17:58 even the remotest possibility
17:59 even the remotest possibility of troops of hundreds of men coming to
18:01 of troops of hundreds of men coming to
18:01 of troops of hundreds of men coming to overtake or raid the mission, that the
18:03 overtake or raid the mission, that the
18:03 overtake or raid the mission, that the padres would have been pretty nervous.
18:05 padres would have been pretty nervous.
18:05 padres would have been pretty nervous. Apparently though, and maybe it was due
18:08 Apparently though, and maybe it was due
18:08 Apparently though, and maybe it was due to their faith in the almighty, the
18:09 to their faith in the almighty, the
18:09 to their faith in the almighty, the padres did not immediately evacuate the
18:12 padres did not immediately evacuate the
18:12 padres did not immediately evacuate the premises. Even though the Spanish
18:13 premises. Even though the Spanish
18:14 premises. Even though the Spanish authorities, after the incident in
18:15 authorities, after the incident in
18:15 authorities, after the incident in Monterey, pretty much ordered everyone
18:17 Monterey, pretty much ordered everyone
18:17 Monterey, pretty much ordered everyone to evacuate, Father Barona and Father
18:20 to evacuate, Father Barona and Father
18:20 to evacuate, Father Barona and Father Boscan did not
18:21 Boscan did not
18:21 Boscan did not seem too concerned. By the way, this
18:23 seem too concerned. By the way, this
18:23 seem too concerned. By the way, this sort of south wing of the mission facing
18:25 sort of south wing of the mission facing
18:25 sort of south wing of the mission facing the mission entrance today is the wing
18:28 the mission entrance today is the wing
18:28 the mission entrance today is the wing in which the padres lived. Now, what
18:30 in which the padres lived. Now, what
18:30 in which the padres lived. Now, what they were ordered to do is gather up all
18:33 they were ordered to do is gather up all
18:33 they were ordered to do is gather up all the valuables at the mission and take
18:35 the valuables at the mission and take
18:35 the valuables at the mission and take everybody and evacuate across the hills
18:38 everybody and evacuate across the hills
18:38 everybody and evacuate across the hills to an inland mission called San Antonio
18:40 to an inland mission called San Antonio
18:40 to an inland mission called San Antonio de la Pala. Forgive the pronunciation,
18:42 de la Pala. Forgive the pronunciation,
18:42 de la Pala. Forgive the pronunciation, Baxter. You know I don't speak Spanish.
18:43 Baxter. You know I don't speak Spanish.
18:43 Baxter. You know I don't speak Spanish. But whether it was faith or foolishness,
18:46 But whether it was faith or foolishness,
18:46 But whether it was faith or foolishness, the padres did not do that. For one
18:48 the padres did not do that. For one
18:49 the padres did not do that. For one thing, it would have been 40 or 50 miles
18:51 thing, it would have been 40 or 50 miles
18:51 thing, it would have been 40 or 50 miles over the hills, so quite an ordeal. And
18:53 over the hills, so quite an ordeal. And
18:53 over the hills, so quite an ordeal. And they didn't know for sure Bouchard was
18:56 they didn't know for sure Bouchard was
18:56 they didn't know for sure Bouchard was going to land here. After all, there
18:57 going to land here. After all, there
18:57 going to land here. After all, there were plenty of other Spanish settlements
18:59 were plenty of other Spanish settlements
18:59 were plenty of other Spanish settlements that he skipped right over. So, the
19:01 that he skipped right over. So, the
19:01 that he skipped right over. So, the padres here decided to abide their time.
19:04 padres here decided to abide their time.
19:04 padres here decided to abide their time. By the way, this is their dormitorio.
19:06 By the way, this is their dormitorio.
19:06 By the way, this is their dormitorio. This is where they actually slept in
19:09 This is where they actually slept in
19:09 This is where they actually slept in this very room in the mission. So, you
19:11 this very room in the mission. So, you
19:11 this very room in the mission. So, you can imagine then in the beginning of
19:13 can imagine then in the beginning of
19:13 can imagine then in the beginning of December 1818. The padres in this very
19:16 December 1818. The padres in this very
19:16 December 1818. The padres in this very room or in these very rooms are
19:18 room or in these very rooms are
19:18 room or in these very rooms are discussing the question of the raiding
19:21 discussing the question of the raiding
19:21 discussing the question of the raiding and invading pirates and what they were
19:23 and invading pirates and what they were
19:23 and invading pirates and what they were going to do. Perhaps pondering the
19:25 going to do. Perhaps pondering the
19:25 going to do. Perhaps pondering the question over a meal in this very room.
19:27 question over a meal in this very room.
19:28 question over a meal in this very room. At any rate, what they decided to do was
19:30 At any rate, what they decided to do was
19:30 At any rate, what they decided to do was to wait and see. And honestly, you can't
19:32 to wait and see. And honestly, you can't
19:32 to wait and see. And honestly, you can't really blame them because from their
19:34 really blame them because from their
19:34 really blame them because from their perspective, this place was the middle
19:36 perspective, this place was the middle
19:36 perspective, this place was the middle of nowhere. They weren't exactly dealing
19:37 of nowhere. They weren't exactly dealing
19:37 of nowhere. They weren't exactly dealing with rivers of gold and silver out here.
19:40 with rivers of gold and silver out here.
19:40 with rivers of gold and silver out here. The warehouses next to the padres
19:42 The warehouses next to the padres
19:42 The warehouses next to the padres quarters were packed with things like
19:43 quarters were packed with things like
19:43 quarters were packed with things like wheat, barley, corn, peas, lentils,
19:47 wheat, barley, corn, peas, lentils,
19:47 wheat, barley, corn, peas, lentils, rendered fats or tallow, dried and
19:49 rendered fats or tallow, dried and
19:49 rendered fats or tallow, dried and salted beef. And of course, because they
19:51 salted beef. And of course, because they
19:51 salted beef. And of course, because they had so many cattle, probably piles and
19:53 had so many cattle, probably piles and
19:53 had so many cattle, probably piles and piles of cowhide and leather, which I
19:56 piles of cowhide and leather, which I
19:56 piles of cowhide and leather, which I believe they tanned right here on the
19:58 believe they tanned right here on the
19:58 believe they tanned right here on the backside of the old mission warehouses,
20:01 backside of the old mission warehouses,
20:01 backside of the old mission warehouses, that as you can see have been
20:02 that as you can see have been
20:02 that as you can see have been reconstructed over the years. Although
20:03 reconstructed over the years. Although
20:03 reconstructed over the years. Although there's quite a few pieces of original
20:05 there's quite a few pieces of original
20:05 there's quite a few pieces of original adobe left scattered around. They had a
20:07 adobe left scattered around. They had a
20:07 adobe left scattered around. They had a little bit of wine stored out here, a
20:09 little bit of wine stored out here, a
20:09 little bit of wine stored out here, a little bit of brandy. Like I said, a
20:10 little bit of brandy. Like I said, a
20:10 little bit of brandy. Like I said, a little bit of leather, but mostly just
20:12 little bit of leather, but mostly just
20:12 little bit of leather, but mostly just livestock and corn. Food. So like I say,
20:15 livestock and corn. Food. So like I say,
20:15 livestock and corn. Food. So like I say, if you're the priests in charge of a
20:17 if you're the priests in charge of a
20:17 if you're the priests in charge of a thousand people here or controlling a
20:20 thousand people here or controlling a
20:20 thousand people here or controlling a thousand people here as some would put
20:22 thousand people here as some would put
20:22 thousand people here as some would put it with a fighting force of maybe 10,
20:24 it with a fighting force of maybe 10,
20:24 it with a fighting force of maybe 10, maybe 15 guys total if you include the
20:26 maybe 15 guys total if you include the
20:26 maybe 15 guys total if you include the civilian men around here, running away
20:29 civilian men around here, running away
20:29 civilian men around here, running away 50 miles to the hills for no reason
20:31 50 miles to the hills for no reason
20:31 50 miles to the hills for no reason seemed pretty foolhardy. So you can see
20:34 seemed pretty foolhardy. So you can see
20:34 seemed pretty foolhardy. So you can see why the padres decided to stay here, to
20:37 why the padres decided to stay here, to
20:37 why the padres decided to stay here, to wait, and to see. Especially as they
20:39 wait, and to see. Especially as they
20:39 wait, and to see. Especially as they figured, "Well, there's plenty of other
20:40 figured, "Well, there's plenty of other
20:40 figured, "Well, there's plenty of other land we can run to in the local area."
20:43 land we can run to in the local area."
20:43 land we can run to in the local area." But we'll get back to that later.
20:44 But we'll get back to that later.
20:44 But we'll get back to that later. Meanwhile, while the padres at the
20:46 Meanwhile, while the padres at the
20:46 Meanwhile, while the padres at the mission down here and the local
20:48 mission down here and the local
20:48 mission down here and the local townsfolk of San Juan Capistrano were
20:51 townsfolk of San Juan Capistrano were
20:51 townsfolk of San Juan Capistrano were deciding whether or not to take this
20:53 deciding whether or not to take this
20:53 deciding whether or not to take this threat of pirates seriously, Bouchard
20:54 threat of pirates seriously, Bouchard
20:54 threat of pirates seriously, Bouchard and his men weren't just laying around,
20:56 and his men weren't just laying around,
20:56 and his men weren't just laying around, right? They were creeping their way down
20:59 right? They were creeping their way down
20:59 right? They were creeping their way down the California coast getting closer and
21:01 the California coast getting closer and
21:01 the California coast getting closer and closer to Orange County. And by this
21:03 closer to Orange County. And by this
21:03 closer to Orange County. And by this point, they were not the happiest people
21:05 point, they were not the happiest people
21:05 point, they were not the happiest people in the world. Bouchard had made his
21:07 in the world. Bouchard had made his
21:07 in the world. Bouchard had made his strongest point attacking Monterey, but
21:10 strongest point attacking Monterey, but
21:10 strongest point attacking Monterey, but rather than finding the citizens or the
21:12 rather than finding the citizens or the
21:12 rather than finding the citizens or the Indians as they would have called them
21:13 Indians as they would have called them
21:13 Indians as they would have called them then, ready to rise up in revolt against
21:16 then, ready to rise up in revolt against
21:16 then, ready to rise up in revolt against the Spanish, they just kept meeting
21:18 the Spanish, they just kept meeting
21:18 the Spanish, they just kept meeting pesky resistance. Not only that, but
21:20 pesky resistance. Not only that, but
21:20 pesky resistance. Not only that, but they weren't exactly finding rivers of
21:21 they weren't exactly finding rivers of
21:22 they weren't exactly finding rivers of gold when they were pillaging and
21:23 gold when they were pillaging and
21:23 gold when they were pillaging and plundering. They were finding fresh
21:24 plundering. They were finding fresh
21:24 plundering. They were finding fresh food, fresh supplies, water, a little
21:26 food, fresh supplies, water, a little
21:26 food, fresh supplies, water, a little bit of livestock here and there, but
21:28 bit of livestock here and there, but
21:28 bit of livestock here and there, but hardly enough to keep a pirate crew
21:31 hardly enough to keep a pirate crew
21:31 hardly enough to keep a pirate crew satisfied. So, Bouchard was definitely
21:33 satisfied. So, Bouchard was definitely
21:33 satisfied. So, Bouchard was definitely not done raiding along the California
21:35 not done raiding along the California
21:35 not done raiding along the California coast. He needed to at least make one
21:37 coast. He needed to at least make one
21:37 coast. He needed to at least make one more strike. Now, as they got near Los
21:39 more strike. Now, as they got near Los
21:40 more strike. Now, as they got near Los Angeles, there was a pretty big
21:41 Angeles, there was a pretty big
21:41 Angeles, there was a pretty big population, relatively speaking, in the
21:44 population, relatively speaking, in the
21:44 population, relatively speaking, in the area. Of course, had Mission San
21:46 area. Of course, had Mission San
21:46 area. Of course, had Mission San Gabriel, one of the wealthier and
21:48 Gabriel, one of the wealthier and
21:48 Gabriel, one of the wealthier and well-populated mission areas. There were
21:50 well-populated mission areas. There were
21:50 well-populated mission areas. There were just too many Spanish residents there
21:53 just too many Spanish residents there
21:53 just too many Spanish residents there and too many soldiers to make the effort
21:55 and too many soldiers to make the effort
21:55 and too many soldiers to make the effort worth it. And yet, between, almost
21:57 worth it. And yet, between, almost
21:57 worth it. And yet, between, almost exactly between Mission San Gabriel and
22:00 exactly between Mission San Gabriel and
22:00 exactly between Mission San Gabriel and the very well-defended
22:02 the very well-defended
22:02 the very well-defended and populated, again, relatively
22:04 and populated, again, relatively
22:04 and populated, again, relatively speaking, settlement of San Diego, they
22:07 speaking, settlement of San Diego, they
22:07 speaking, settlement of San Diego, they had planted this mission here, Mission
22:09 had planted this mission here, Mission
22:09 had planted this mission here, Mission San Juan Capistrano. While the padres
22:13 San Juan Capistrano. While the padres
22:13 San Juan Capistrano. While the padres were waffling on whether or not to
22:15 were waffling on whether or not to
22:15 were waffling on whether or not to evacuate everybody from the mission,
22:17 evacuate everybody from the mission,
22:17 evacuate everybody from the mission, Bouchard and his men were calculating
22:19 Bouchard and his men were calculating
22:19 Bouchard and his men were calculating that it would be the perfect target.
22:22 that it would be the perfect target.
22:22 that it would be the perfect target. Now, today, Mission San Juan Capistrano
22:23 Now, today, Mission San Juan Capistrano
22:23 Now, today, Mission San Juan Capistrano doesn't seem that close to the beach.
22:25 doesn't seem that close to the beach.
22:25 doesn't seem that close to the beach. There's a whole bunch of build-up, so
22:26 There's a whole bunch of build-up, so
22:26 There's a whole bunch of build-up, so many neighborhoods and businesses and
22:28 many neighborhoods and businesses and
22:28 many neighborhoods and businesses and Costcos and even, of course, the five
22:30 Costcos and even, of course, the five
22:31 Costcos and even, of course, the five freeway. But, Bouchard's men knew that
22:33 freeway. But, Bouchard's men knew that
22:33 freeway. But, Bouchard's men knew that San Juan Capistrano the mission, the
22:35 San Juan Capistrano the mission, the
22:35 San Juan Capistrano the mission, the fertile fields were up that way. With
22:37 fertile fields were up that way. With
22:37 fertile fields were up that way. With just 3 mi of a pretty well-established
22:40 just 3 mi of a pretty well-established
22:40 just 3 mi of a pretty well-established road along the creek system between the
22:43 road along the creek system between the
22:43 road along the creek system between the mission and the ocean. Remember,
22:47 mission and the ocean. Remember,
22:47 mission and the ocean. Remember, Bouchard had a lot of men that were
22:48 Bouchard had a lot of men that were
22:48 Bouchard had a lot of men that were familiar with this coastline. Not only
22:50 familiar with this coastline. Not only
22:50 familiar with this coastline. Not only that, but down here where San Juan Creek
22:53 that, but down here where San Juan Creek
22:53 that, but down here where San Juan Creek empties into the Pacific Ocean near Dana
22:55 empties into the Pacific Ocean near Dana
22:55 empties into the Pacific Ocean near Dana Point, this area had a pretty zesty
22:58 Point, this area had a pretty zesty
22:58 Point, this area had a pretty zesty reputation for smuggling and illegal
23:00 reputation for smuggling and illegal
23:01 reputation for smuggling and illegal trade when it came to ships landing here
23:03 trade when it came to ships landing here
23:03 trade when it came to ships landing here in Orange County and then you know

23:09 pirates know that the mission was not
23:09 pirates know that the mission was not all that well defended and just 3 miles
23:11 all that well defended and just 3 miles
23:11 all that well defended and just 3 miles inland from the coast, they also knew
23:13 inland from the coast, they also knew
23:13 inland from the coast, they also knew there was safe anchorage for them here
23:16 there was safe anchorage for them here
23:16 there was safe anchorage for them here in San Juan Bay which today of course is
23:18 in San Juan Bay which today of course is

23:22 Dana Point technically refers to the
23:22 Dana Point technically refers to the Highlands behind me. Those hills just
23:25 Highlands behind me. Those hills just
23:25 Highlands behind me. Those hills just barely visible in the distance, those
23:26 barely visible in the distance, those
23:26 barely visible in the distance, those cliffs poking out into the ocean. And on

24:00 to help with the defense of San Juan Capistrano up here under a guy named
24:03 Capistrano up here under a guy named
24:03 Capistrano up here under a guy named Santiago Arguello. He of course met up
24:05 Santiago Arguello. He of course met up
24:05 Santiago Arguello. He of course met up with the padres at the mission and then
24:08 with the padres at the mission and then
24:08 with the padres at the mission and then set a watch on the bay here on the
24:11 set a watch on the bay here on the
24:11 set a watch on the bay here on the harbor to keep a lookout for Bouchard
24:13 harbor to keep a lookout for Bouchard
24:13 harbor to keep a lookout for Bouchard and the pirates. The landscape has been
24:15 and the pirates. The landscape has been
24:15 and the pirates. The landscape has been radically transformed. Everything has
24:17 radically transformed. Everything has
24:17 radically transformed. Everything has been bulldozed, the land has been
24:18 been bulldozed, the land has been
24:19 been bulldozed, the land has been extended, the beach has been changed.
24:20 extended, the beach has been changed.
24:21 extended, the beach has been changed. But the mouth of San Juan Creek still
24:22 But the mouth of San Juan Creek still
24:23 But the mouth of San Juan Creek still empties here into the old San Juan Bay.
24:25 empties here into the old San Juan Bay.
24:25 empties here into the old San Juan Bay. The Highlands of Dana Point are off here
24:27 The Highlands of Dana Point are off here
24:27 The Highlands of Dana Point are off here behind me. You can see why coming around
24:29 behind me. You can see why coming around
24:29 behind me. You can see why coming around that point and anchoring in this bay,
24:32 that point and anchoring in this bay,
24:32 that point and anchoring in this bay, this was the safest harbor around. And
24:34 this was the safest harbor around. And
24:34 this was the safest harbor around. And not only that, the mouth of San Juan
24:35 not only that, the mouth of San Juan
24:35 not only that, the mouth of San Juan Creek back then would have been a highly
24:37 Creek back then would have been a highly
24:37 Creek back then would have been a highly visible sign they were in the right
24:39 visible sign they were in the right
24:39 visible sign they were in the right place and this indeed was the way up to
24:42 place and this indeed was the way up to
24:42 place and this indeed was the way up to the mission. Not only that, they had a
24:43 the mission. Not only that, they had a
24:43 the mission. Not only that, they had a bunch of pirates on board who as I said
24:45 bunch of pirates on board who as I said
24:45 bunch of pirates on board who as I said were very familiar with this area
24:47 were very familiar with this area
24:47 were very familiar with this area already due to some of the local rumors
24:50 already due to some of the local rumors
24:50 already due to some of the local rumors of smuggling. Now by this point Arguello
24:52 of smuggling. Now by this point Arguello
24:52 of smuggling. Now by this point Arguello and his men, they knew the pirates were
24:54 and his men, they knew the pirates were
24:54 and his men, they knew the pirates were coming. They had been spotted it down
24:55 coming. They had been spotted it down
24:55 coming. They had been spotted it down the coast in what became Los Angeles and
24:58 the coast in what became Los Angeles and
24:58 the coast in what became Los Angeles and then North Orange County. And on
24:59 then North Orange County. And on
24:59 then North Orange County. And on December 14th, let's just stick with
25:01 December 14th, let's just stick with
25:01 December 14th, let's just stick with that date for now. This is where they
25:03 that date for now. This is where they
25:03 that date for now. This is where they saw them anchor La Argentina and the
25:06 saw them anchor La Argentina and the
25:06 saw them anchor La Argentina and the Santa Rosa. And as Bouchard's men rode
25:09 Santa Rosa. And as Bouchard's men rode
25:09 Santa Rosa. And as Bouchard's men rode ashore in their smaller boats, Arguello
25:11 ashore in their smaller boats, Arguello
25:11 ashore in their smaller boats, Arguello came down to the beach to meet them or
25:13 came down to the beach to meet them or
25:13 came down to the beach to meet them or send someone to meet them to see what
25:14 send someone to meet them to see what
25:14 send someone to meet them to see what exactly their demands were. They didn't
25:17 exactly their demands were. They didn't
25:17 exactly their demands were. They didn't immediately threaten Arguello or his men
25:20 immediately threaten Arguello or his men
25:20 immediately threaten Arguello or his men or threaten to burn down the town or
25:22 or threaten to burn down the town or
25:22 or threaten to burn down the town or sack the mission or anything. But
25:23 sack the mission or anything. But
25:23 sack the mission or anything. But apparently they did pretty forcefully
25:26 apparently they did pretty forcefully
25:26 apparently they did pretty forcefully demand whatever food and provisions they
25:28 demand whatever food and provisions they
25:28 demand whatever food and provisions they had to be completely resupplied in their
25:31 had to be completely resupplied in their
25:31 had to be completely resupplied in their ships before they went on their merry
25:32 ships before they went on their merry
25:32 ships before they went on their merry way. Which sounds like a pretty good
25:34 way. Which sounds like a pretty good
25:34 way. Which sounds like a pretty good deal. I mean, if I was in Arguello's
25:35 deal. I mean, if I was in Arguello's
25:36 deal. I mean, if I was in Arguello's shoes with maybe 30 guys against 300 or
25:39 shoes with maybe 30 guys against 300 or
25:39 shoes with maybe 30 guys against 300 or so out on those ships, not to mention
25:40 so out on those ships, not to mention
25:40 so out on those ships, not to mention cannons and everything else, I'd
25:41 cannons and everything else, I'd
25:41 cannons and everything else, I'd probably be like, "All right, we'll get
25:43 probably be like, "All right, we'll get
25:43 probably be like, "All right, we'll get you some food and water and you guys can
25:44 you some food and water and you guys can
25:44 you some food and water and you guys can take off." But apparently Arguello had a
25:46 take off." But apparently Arguello had a
25:46 take off." But apparently Arguello had a different response in mind. And
25:48 different response in mind. And
25:48 different response in mind. And according to Peter Corney at least, who
25:49 according to Peter Corney at least, who
25:49 according to Peter Corney at least, who was in charge of the Santa Rosa as well
25:51 was in charge of the Santa Rosa as well
25:51 was in charge of the Santa Rosa as well as a few other Spanish sources, Arguello
25:53 as a few other Spanish sources, Arguello
25:53 as a few other Spanish sources, Arguello said, "Oh yeah, we'll resupply you.
25:55 said, "Oh yeah, we'll resupply you.
25:55 said, "Oh yeah, we'll resupply you. We'll give you a supply of powder and
25:57 We'll give you a supply of powder and
25:57 We'll give you a supply of powder and shot." Or in today's terms, yeah, eat
25:59 shot." Or in today's terms, yeah, eat
25:59 shot." Or in today's terms, yeah, eat lead. It's a pretty sassy reply, pretty
26:01 lead. It's a pretty sassy reply, pretty
26:01 lead. It's a pretty sassy reply, pretty bold indeed. And apparently, when the
26:04 bold indeed. And apparently, when the
26:04 bold indeed. And apparently, when the men got back to the ship and told
26:05 men got back to the ship and told
26:05 men got back to the ship and told Bouchard, as Peter Corney puts it, "The
26:07 Bouchard, as Peter Corney puts it, "The
26:07 Bouchard, as Peter Corney puts it, "The commodore was very much incensed at this
26:09 commodore was very much incensed at this
26:09 commodore was very much incensed at this answer." In other words, this really
26:12 answer." In other words, this really
26:12 answer." In other words, this really ticked the pirates off, as you can
26:13 ticked the pirates off, as you can
26:13 ticked the pirates off, as you can imagine. I mean, even riding out at
26:16 imagine. I mean, even riding out at
26:16 imagine. I mean, even riding out at anchor a distance from the shore,
26:17 anchor a distance from the shore,
26:17 anchor a distance from the shore, Bouchard and his men could easily see
26:19 Bouchard and his men could easily see
26:20 Bouchard and his men could easily see that Arguello only had like 30 guys with
26:22 that Arguello only had like 30 guys with
26:22 that Arguello only had like 30 guys with them and only some of those mounted on
26:23 them and only some of those mounted on
26:23 them and only some of those mounted on horseback. He knew that this was a bluff
26:25 horseback. He knew that this was a bluff
26:25 horseback. He knew that this was a bluff and probably a stupid one. And that is
26:27 and probably a stupid one. And that is
26:27 and probably a stupid one. And that is when he and his council of war decided
26:31 when he and his council of war decided
26:31 when he and his council of war decided that the mission indeed would be a
26:34 that the mission indeed would be a
26:34 that the mission indeed would be a target. All right, so clearly now things
26:37 target. All right, so clearly now things
26:37 target. All right, so clearly now things were getting pretty serious. Arguello
26:38 were getting pretty serious. Arguello
26:38 were getting pretty serious. Arguello had issued his threat and offered to
26:40 had issued his threat and offered to
26:40 had issued his threat and offered to give the pirates a little taste of
26:41 give the pirates a little taste of
26:42 give the pirates a little taste of powder and shot. And while his small
26:43 powder and shot. And while his small
26:43 powder and shot. And while his small force of 30 guys probably mostly stayed
26:46 force of 30 guys probably mostly stayed
26:46 force of 30 guys probably mostly stayed down by the beach to keep an eye on the
26:48 down by the beach to keep an eye on the
26:48 down by the beach to keep an eye on the ship, they undoubtedly sent riders back
26:50 ship, they undoubtedly sent riders back
26:50 ship, they undoubtedly sent riders back up here, back up Camino Capistrano to
26:53 up here, back up Camino Capistrano to
26:53 up here, back up Camino Capistrano to the mission to give warning that the
26:55 the mission to give warning that the
26:55 the mission to give warning that the pirates had in fact landed and Arqueo
26:59 pirates had in fact landed and Arqueo
26:59 pirates had in fact landed and Arqueo had issued threats. Now, let's not
27:00 had issued threats. Now, let's not
27:00 had issued threats. Now, let's not forget this is 3 weeks after the sacking
27:03 forget this is 3 weeks after the sacking
27:03 forget this is 3 weeks after the sacking of Monterey, the capital of Spanish
27:06 of Monterey, the capital of Spanish
27:06 of Monterey, the capital of Spanish California. And word spread a lot more
27:07 California. And word spread a lot more
27:07 California. And word spread a lot more quickly than we might imagine today. The
27:09 quickly than we might imagine today. The
27:09 quickly than we might imagine today. The Padres had had plenty of warning. In
27:12 Padres had had plenty of warning. In
27:12 Padres had had plenty of warning. In fact, they had had that order to
27:14 fact, they had had that order to
27:14 fact, they had had that order to evacuate and to move all their people,
27:16 evacuate and to move all their people,
27:16 evacuate and to move all their people, their valuables, their provisions, their
27:18 their valuables, their provisions, their
27:18 their valuables, their provisions, their livestock overland to another mission
27:20 livestock overland to another mission
27:20 livestock overland to another mission site, San Antonio de Pala. But, that was
27:23 site, San Antonio de Pala. But, that was
27:23 site, San Antonio de Pala. But, that was 50 miles away on foot and not 50 miles
27:26 50 miles away on foot and not 50 miles
27:26 50 miles away on foot and not 50 miles of easy road, but 50 miles over rough
27:29 of easy road, but 50 miles over rough
27:29 of easy road, but 50 miles over rough and rugged terrain over the hills. That
27:31 and rugged terrain over the hills. That
27:31 and rugged terrain over the hills. That was never going to happen. That was
27:32 was never going to happen. That was
27:33 was never going to happen. That was pretty much never on the table for the
27:34 pretty much never on the table for the
27:34 pretty much never on the table for the Padres here at the mission. And so, they
27:36 Padres here at the mission. And so, they
27:36 Padres here at the mission. And so, they made other easier plans. But, now that
27:38 made other easier plans. But, now that
27:38 made other easier plans. But, now that the dastardly pirates had finally
27:41 the dastardly pirates had finally
27:41 the dastardly pirates had finally arrived, finally landed, they knew the
27:43 arrived, finally landed, they knew the
27:43 arrived, finally landed, they knew the evacuation had to get real. And yet, the
27:46 evacuation had to get real. And yet, the
27:46 evacuation had to get real. And yet, the two Padres in charge, Father Barona and
27:48 two Padres in charge, Father Barona and
27:48 two Padres in charge, Father Barona and Father Boscana, still dragged their feet
27:51 Father Boscana, still dragged their feet
27:51 Father Boscana, still dragged their feet and slow-walked the evacuation. There
27:53 and slow-walked the evacuation. There
27:53 and slow-walked the evacuation. There isn't even anything I could find for the
27:54 isn't even anything I could find for the
27:54 isn't even anything I could find for the night of the 14th when they knew the
27:56 night of the 14th when they knew the
27:56 night of the 14th when they knew the pirates were anchored just offshore that
27:58 pirates were anchored just offshore that
27:58 pirates were anchored just offshore that indicates any kind of panic or any kind
28:01 indicates any kind of panic or any kind
28:01 indicates any kind of panic or any kind of crazy full evacuation. Nonetheless,
28:04 of crazy full evacuation. Nonetheless,
28:04 of crazy full evacuation. Nonetheless, though, they knew the pirates were
28:05 though, they knew the pirates were
28:05 though, they knew the pirates were coming. And so, oxcarts loaded with the
28:07 coming. And so, oxcarts loaded with the
28:08 coming. And so, oxcarts loaded with the mission's valuables and some of the
28:09 mission's valuables and some of the
28:09 mission's valuables and some of the mission's livestock and provisions and
28:11 mission's livestock and provisions and
28:11 mission's livestock and provisions and no doubt some of the neophytes, some of
28:13 no doubt some of the neophytes, some of
28:13 no doubt some of the neophytes, some of the Juaneno Indians as they were called
28:15 the Juaneno Indians as they were called
28:15 the Juaneno Indians as they were called or the Acjachemen people, began the
28:17 or the Acjachemen people, began the
28:17 or the Acjachemen people, began the evacuation. I've read about this my
28:20 evacuation. I've read about this my
28:20 evacuation. I've read about this my whole life. Whenever the pirates are
28:21 whole life. Whenever the pirates are
28:21 whole life. Whenever the pirates are mentioned, it is usually only a
28:22 mentioned, it is usually only a
28:22 mentioned, it is usually only a paragraph. For some reason, it's always
28:24 paragraph. For some reason, it's always
28:24 paragraph. For some reason, it's always treated as sort of a footnote in the
28:25 treated as sort of a footnote in the
28:26 treated as sort of a footnote in the mission's history that everybody sort of
28:27 mission's history that everybody sort of
28:27 mission's history that everybody sort of evacuated to the hills and left. What I
28:29 evacuated to the hills and left. What I
28:29 evacuated to the hills and left. What I did not know until very recently is we
28:31 did not know until very recently is we
28:31 did not know until very recently is we know exactly where the people at the
28:34 know exactly where the people at the
28:34 know exactly where the people at the mission evacuated to. And it was not 50
28:37 mission evacuated to. And it was not 50
28:37 mission evacuated to. And it was not 50 miles over the hills to the southeast.
28:39 miles over the hills to the southeast.
28:39 miles over the hills to the southeast. It was about 8 miles up the creek from
28:42 It was about 8 miles up the creek from
28:42 It was about 8 miles up the creek from Mission San Juan Capistrano. The mission
28:45 Mission San Juan Capistrano. The mission

29:31 buildings built to house the mission Indians. But of course, they wouldn't
29:33 Indians. But of course, they wouldn't
29:33 Indians. But of course, they wouldn't have been living in fancy buildings like
29:35 have been living in fancy buildings like
29:35 have been living in fancy buildings like this. They would have also had like
29:36 this. They would have also had like
29:36 this. They would have also had like their reed or tool huts. There's a name
29:38 their reed or tool huts. There's a name
29:38 their reed or tool huts. There's a name for those. I can't exactly think of it
29:40 for those. I can't exactly think of it
29:40 for those. I can't exactly think of it off the top of my head at this moment.
29:41 off the top of my head at this moment.
29:41 off the top of my head at this moment. But we'll get back to that. But even
29:42 But we'll get back to that. But even
29:42 But we'll get back to that. But even this adobe right here just proves of
29:45 this adobe right here just proves of
29:45 this adobe right here just proves of residents were living down in this area
29:47 residents were living down in this area
29:47 residents were living down in this area backed up against the creek, which today
29:49 backed up against the creek, which today
29:49 backed up against the creek, which today is not a beautiful pristine natural
29:52 is not a beautiful pristine natural
29:52 is not a beautiful pristine natural landmark, but more like a concreted up
29:54 landmark, but more like a concreted up
29:54 landmark, but more like a concreted up storm channel like the other creeks in
29:56 storm channel like the other creeks in
29:56 storm channel like the other creeks in Orange County. Nevertheless, it was this
29:58 Orange County. Nevertheless, it was this
29:58 Orange County. Nevertheless, it was this sickly looking rivulet that was the main
30:01 sickly looking rivulet that was the main
30:01 sickly looking rivulet that was the main water source for the area other than the
30:03 water source for the area other than the
30:03 water source for the area other than the mission's wells and their little
30:04 mission's wells and their little
30:04 mission's wells and their little irrigation channel. This would have been
30:05 irrigation channel. This would have been
30:05 irrigation channel. This would have been the primary source of water for everyone
30:08 the primary source of water for everyone
30:08 the primary source of water for everyone living in the area, especially for their
30:11 living in the area, especially for their
30:11 living in the area, especially for their livestock. Now, the mission itself
30:13 livestock. Now, the mission itself
30:13 livestock. Now, the mission itself controlled somewhere in the neighborhood
30:15 controlled somewhere in the neighborhood
30:15 controlled somewhere in the neighborhood of 14 to 15,000
30:17 of 14 to 15,000
30:17 of 14 to 15,000 cattle. That's not counting any other
30:19 cattle. That's not counting any other
30:19 cattle. That's not counting any other kind of livestock or horses. Obviously,
30:21 kind of livestock or horses. Obviously,
30:21 kind of livestock or horses. Obviously, they controlled hundreds of miles of
30:24 they controlled hundreds of miles of
30:24 they controlled hundreds of miles of land around here, hundreds and hundreds
30:26 land around here, hundreds and hundreds
30:26 land around here, hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of acres. And yet to bring
30:28 and hundreds of acres. And yet to bring
30:28 and hundreds of acres. And yet to bring livestock, particularly the cattle, to
30:30 livestock, particularly the cattle, to
30:30 livestock, particularly the cattle, to and from the mission, they would have
30:32 and from the mission, they would have
30:32 and from the mission, they would have traveled up the side of this creek here,
30:35 traveled up the side of this creek here,
30:35 traveled up the side of this creek here, Trabuco Creek, or they would have just
30:37 Trabuco Creek, or they would have just
30:37 Trabuco Creek, or they would have just put it the river or Arroyo Trabuco,
30:39 put it the river or Arroyo Trabuco,

30:45 to the mission and maybe possibly the beach sometimes over and over and over
30:48 beach sometimes over and over and over
30:48 beach sometimes over and over and over again. And in fact, 8 miles up this
30:51 again. And in fact, 8 miles up this
30:51 again. And in fact, 8 miles up this creek, they had even constructed a
30:53 creek, they had even constructed a
30:53 creek, they had even constructed a little way station, a little mission
30:55 little way station, a little mission
30:55 little way station, a little mission satellite location for the people in
30:58 satellite location for the people in
30:58 satellite location for the people in charge of the cattle, a little adobe

31:05 structure. And this was the Padre's plan
31:05 structure. And this was the Padre's plan of evacuation. Gather all the neophytes,
31:07 of evacuation. Gather all the neophytes,

32:36 I'm not kidding. Apparently, this whole
32:36 I'm not kidding. Apparently, this whole area
32:37 area
32:37 area is littered with old bombs. Regular
32:40 is littered with old bombs. Regular
32:40 is littered with old bombs. Regular bombs, and as the sign says, practice
32:43 bombs, and as the sign says, practice
32:43 bombs, and as the sign says, practice bombs. I have no idea why. There were
32:46 bombs. I have no idea why. There were
32:46 bombs. I have no idea why. There were definitely a lot of air bases out here
32:48 definitely a lot of air bases out here
32:48 definitely a lot of air bases out here in the area in Orange County during
32:50 in the area in Orange County during
32:50 in the area in Orange County during World War II, and then of course we had
32:52 World War II, and then of course we had
32:52 World War II, and then of course we had El Toro and all kinds of bases that are
32:55 El Toro and all kinds of bases that are
32:55 El Toro and all kinds of bases that are now closed up and long forgotten. So,
32:58 now closed up and long forgotten. So,
32:58 now closed up and long forgotten. So, this must have been a practice bombing
33:00 this must have been a practice bombing
33:00 this must have been a practice bombing range at some point.
33:02 range at some point.
33:02 range at some point. We must be cautious. Anyway, up there,
33:04 We must be cautious. Anyway, up there,
33:04 We must be cautious. Anyway, up there, there's the neighborhood, there's the
33:06 there's the neighborhood, there's the
33:06 there's the neighborhood, there's the fancy golf course, and then way down
33:09 fancy golf course, and then way down
33:09 fancy golf course, and then way down below us is Trabuco Creek itself. And
33:13 below us is Trabuco Creek itself. And
33:13 below us is Trabuco Creek itself. And just up here on this rise of ground, you
33:16 just up here on this rise of ground, you
33:16 just up here on this rise of ground, you could see exactly why this was a good
33:19 could see exactly why this was a good
33:19 could see exactly why this was a good candidate for like a satellite spot for
33:22 candidate for like a satellite spot for
33:22 candidate for like a satellite spot for the mission. Look at this big, broad,
33:25 the mission. Look at this big, broad,
33:25 the mission. Look at this big, broad, flat shelf here before it drops off down

33:28 flat shelf here before it drops off down into the creek, into the canyon there.
33:30 into the creek, into the canyon there.
33:30 into the creek, into the canyon there. Not only did the Spanish think that this
33:32 Not only did the Spanish think that this
33:32 Not only did the Spanish think that this would be a good place to camp when they
33:34 would be a good place to camp when they
33:34 would be a good place to camp when they were herding cows in the area. With
33:35 were herding cows in the area. With
33:36 were herding cows in the area. With nice, high, dry ground, safe from
33:38 nice, high, dry ground, safe from
33:38 nice, high, dry ground, safe from flooding, and of course the creek there
33:40 flooding, and of course the creek there
33:40 flooding, and of course the creek there to water as many animals as you could
33:42 to water as many animals as you could
33:42 to water as many animals as you could possibly ever need, they found this to
33:44 possibly ever need, they found this to
33:44 possibly ever need, they found this to be the perfect spot for a more permanent
33:47 be the perfect spot for a more permanent
33:47 be the perfect spot for a more permanent settlement. And we're actually looking
33:50 settlement. And we're actually looking
33:50 settlement. And we're actually looking at it right now. This right here was the
33:53 at it right now. This right here was the
33:53 at it right now. This right here was the site of the Trabuco Adobe, or as it
33:57 site of the Trabuco Adobe, or as it
33:57 site of the Trabuco Adobe, or as it became known in later years, Rancho
34:00 became known in later years, Rancho
34:00 became known in later years, Rancho Trabuco. Now, what we're looking at is a
34:02 Trabuco. Now, what we're looking at is a
34:02 Trabuco. Now, what we're looking at is a weird little wooden shed with a weird
34:04 weird little wooden shed with a weird
34:04 weird little wooden shed with a weird little metal roof with a tiny little
34:06 little metal roof with a tiny little
34:07 little metal roof with a tiny little porthole inside. You're actually
34:08 porthole inside. You're actually
34:08 porthole inside. You're actually supposed to be able to go through this
34:09 supposed to be able to go through this
34:09 supposed to be able to go through this fence, but it's been padlocked at some
34:11 fence, but it's been padlocked at some
34:11 fence, but it's been padlocked at some point in the last couple of years with
34:13 point in the last couple of years with
34:13 point in the last couple of years with no sign or explanation why. But what
34:15 no sign or explanation why. But what
34:15 no sign or explanation why. But what this little hut is protecting is the
34:17 this little hut is protecting is the
34:17 this little hut is protecting is the very last tiny little portion of adobe
34:22 very last tiny little portion of adobe
34:22 very last tiny little portion of adobe wall preserved right under this little
34:25 wall preserved right under this little
34:25 wall preserved right under this little shed here. That's what the little
34:26 shed here. That's what the little
34:26 shed here. That's what the little porthole is for, so you can
34:28 porthole is for, so you can
34:28 porthole is for, so you can theoretically peek through and get a
34:30 theoretically peek through and get a
34:30 theoretically peek through and get a glimpse. Most of the photos that we have
34:32 glimpse. Most of the photos that we have
34:32 glimpse. Most of the photos that we have of the Trabuco Adobe are from the 1930s
34:35 of the Trabuco Adobe are from the 1930s
34:35 of the Trabuco Adobe are from the 1930s and 40s when it was a ruin. So, no exact
34:37 and 40s when it was a ruin. So, no exact
34:37 and 40s when it was a ruin. So, no exact floor plan exists that I could find, but
34:40 floor plan exists that I could find, but
34:40 floor plan exists that I could find, but this was a pretty massive building,
34:43 this was a pretty massive building,
34:43 this was a pretty massive building, which is why the fence, I don't know if
34:45 which is why the fence, I don't know if
34:45 which is why the fence, I don't know if you can really see that, is spread out
34:47 you can really see that, is spread out
34:47 you can really see that, is spread out quite a distance to either side of the

35:12 actually leave the mission. They stayed
35:12 actually leave the mission. They stayed down there and sent theoretically some
35:14 down there and sent theoretically some
35:14 down there and sent theoretically some people up ahead here with ox carts, like
35:16 people up ahead here with ox carts, like
35:16 people up ahead here with ox carts, like I said, maybe some of the Juaneño
35:18 I said, maybe some of the Juaneño
35:18 I said, maybe some of the Juaneño Indians or for the most part Ahachmen
35:20 Indians or for the most part Ahachmen
35:20 Indians or for the most part Ahachmen people, I believe is what they were
35:22 people, I believe is what they were

37:33 dedicated to San Francisco Solano, which is what this spot right here was named
37:35 is what this spot right here was named
37:36 is what this spot right here was named by the Portola expedition. That would be

37:47 and 25th, 1769, opening the first overland trail through
37:49 opening the first overland trail through
37:49 opening the first overland trail through California. The reason that we know
37:51 California. The reason that we know
37:51 California. The reason that we know where they camped is because when they
37:53 where they camped is because when they
37:53 where they camped is because when they set up shop here, they did it because
37:55 set up shop here, they did it because
37:55 set up shop here, they did it because down by the creek was an Acjachemen
37:57 down by the creek was an Acjachemen
37:57 down by the creek was an Acjachemen village site. So, just over the edge of
37:59 village site. So, just over the edge of
37:59 village site. So, just over the edge of the ledge there, there were all kinds of
38:01 the ledge there, there were all kinds of
38:01 the ledge there, there were all kinds of Native Americans who had their own
38:03 Native Americans who had their own
38:03 Native Americans who had their own village going on, plenty of access to
38:05 village going on, plenty of access to
38:05 village going on, plenty of access to water. The Spanish figured they have the
38:07 water. The Spanish figured they have the
38:07 water. The Spanish figured they have the Native Americans down there, they've got
38:08 Native Americans down there, they've got
38:08 Native Americans down there, they've got access to food, to water, but we'll camp
38:11 access to food, to water, but we'll camp
38:11 access to food, to water, but we'll camp up on here on this flat shelf on the
38:13 up on here on this flat shelf on the
38:13 up on here on this flat shelf on the hill. Got a little more space, a little
38:15 hill. Got a little more space, a little
38:15 hill. Got a little more space, a little more uh protection, as it were. Yeah, a
38:17 more uh protection, as it were. Yeah, a
38:18 more uh protection, as it were. Yeah, a little protection from bugs and
38:19 little protection from bugs and
38:19 little protection from bugs and mosquitoes and things down by the creek
38:21 mosquitoes and things down by the creek
38:21 mosquitoes and things down by the creek as well. And later on when the mission
38:22 as well. And later on when the mission
38:22 as well. And later on when the mission system came along and gathered up the
38:24 system came along and gathered up the
38:25 system came along and gathered up the Native Americans from this region down
38:27 Native Americans from this region down
38:27 Native Americans from this region down into the mission and the surrounding
38:29 into the mission and the surrounding
38:29 into the mission and the surrounding area itself, they replaced the Native
38:31 area itself, they replaced the Native
38:31 area itself, they replaced the Native American village down there with their
38:33 American village down there with their
38:33 American village down there with their Rancho Trabuco or this little Adobe way
38:36 Rancho Trabuco or this little Adobe way
38:36 Rancho Trabuco or this little Adobe way station for livestock for probably I'm
38:39 station for livestock for probably I'm
38:39 station for livestock for probably I'm guessing, you know, for vaqueros, for
38:41 guessing, you know, for vaqueros, for
38:41 guessing, you know, for vaqueros, for the cowboys that would take care of them
38:43 the cowboys that would take care of them
38:43 the cowboys that would take care of them or the ranch hands or whatever they were
38:44 or the ranch hands or whatever they were
38:44 or the ranch hands or whatever they were technically called. Now, no doubt the
38:47 technically called. Now, no doubt the
38:47 technically called. Now, no doubt the Adobe structure itself was reserved,
38:48 Adobe structure itself was reserved,
38:48 Adobe structure itself was reserved, like I said, for the padres, for the
38:50 like I said, for the padres, for the
38:50 like I said, for the padres, for the loot, anything valuable that they could
38:52 loot, anything valuable that they could
38:52 loot, anything valuable that they could have carried here by hand or by oxcart
38:54 have carried here by hand or by oxcart
38:54 have carried here by hand or by oxcart up from the mission. Doubtless plenty of
38:56 up from the mission. Doubtless plenty of
38:56 up from the mission. Doubtless plenty of the evacuees camped up there by the
38:58 the evacuees camped up there by the
38:58 the evacuees camped up there by the Adobe itself. But if I were here for
39:00 Adobe itself. But if I were here for
39:00 Adobe itself. But if I were here for easy access to water, I would have made
39:02 easy access to water, I would have made
39:02 easy access to water, I would have made my way down the steep banks of the hills
39:04 my way down the steep banks of the hills
39:05 my way down the steep banks of the hills here to the side of that old Native
39:06 here to the side of that old Native
39:06 here to the side of that old Native American village. Some of the people
39:08 American village. Some of the people
39:08 American village. Some of the people fleeing, no doubt, it was the side of
39:09 fleeing, no doubt, it was the side of
39:09 fleeing, no doubt, it was the side of the homes of their ancestors and of
39:11 the homes of their ancestors and of
39:11 the homes of their ancestors and of course the source
39:13 course the source
39:13 course the source of water. The beautiful
39:16 of water. The beautiful
39:16 of water. The beautiful Trabuco Creek. I've seen some beautiful
39:18 Trabuco Creek. I've seen some beautiful
39:18 Trabuco Creek. I've seen some beautiful natural parts of Trabuco Creek before up
39:21 natural parts of Trabuco Creek before up
39:21 natural parts of Trabuco Creek before up in O'Neill Park camping up there as a
39:23 in O'Neill Park camping up there as a
39:23 in O'Neill Park camping up there as a kid. But until recently when I started
39:25 kid. But until recently when I started
39:25 kid. But until recently when I started investigating Bouchard's raid, I had
39:26 investigating Bouchard's raid, I had
39:26 investigating Bouchard's raid, I had never heard of the Trabuco Adobe. I
39:29 never heard of the Trabuco Adobe. I
39:29 never heard of the Trabuco Adobe. I didn't know that there was any kind of
39:30 didn't know that there was any kind of
39:30 didn't know that there was any kind of satellite mission site like that that
39:33 satellite mission site like that that
39:33 satellite mission site like that that was still around or at least a tiny
39:34 was still around or at least a tiny
39:34 was still around or at least a tiny fragment was still around and I
39:36 fragment was still around and I
39:36 fragment was still around and I certainly didn't know about this. I'm
39:38 certainly didn't know about this. I'm
39:38 certainly didn't know about this. I'm sure the locals know, right? But this
39:39 sure the locals know, right? But this
39:39 sure the locals know, right? But this well-kept secret here, this little
39:42 well-kept secret here, this little
39:42 well-kept secret here, this little beautiful part of Trabuco Creek down
39:45 beautiful part of Trabuco Creek down
39:45 beautiful part of Trabuco Creek down here in the canyons,
39:48 here in the canyons,
39:48 here in the canyons, covered with thick It covers all kinds
39:50 covered with thick It covers all kinds
39:50 covered with thick It covers all kinds of trees, especially oak trees and
39:52 of trees, especially oak trees and
39:52 of trees, especially oak trees and apparently unexploded ordnance from a
39:54 apparently unexploded ordnance from a
39:54 apparently unexploded ordnance from a Marine Corps air station El Toro. Down
39:57 Marine Corps air station El Toro. Down
39:57 Marine Corps air station El Toro. Down here is all completely overgrown, but
40:00 here is all completely overgrown, but
40:00 here is all completely overgrown, but you have to imagine that when this was
40:02 you have to imagine that when this was
40:02 you have to imagine that when this was Native American territory
40:06 Native American territory
40:06 Native American territory and their village was down here, some of
40:08 and their village was down here, some of
40:08 and their village was down here, some of this brush would have been burned and
40:09 this brush would have been burned and
40:09 this brush would have been burned and cleared away and what a beautiful
40:12 cleared away and what a beautiful
40:12 cleared away and what a beautiful landscape
40:14 landscape
40:14 landscape to have your sort of
40:16 to have your sort of
40:16 to have your sort of reed huts down here. For lack of a
40:18 reed huts down here. For lack of a
40:18 reed huts down here. For lack of a better word, I can't I can't remember
40:19 better word, I can't I can't remember
40:19 better word, I can't I can't remember what they were called. And not only
40:20 what they were called. And not only
40:21 what they were called. And not only that, you had access to just unlimited
40:23 that, you had access to just unlimited
40:23 that, you had access to just unlimited amounts of acorns, which the natives in
40:25 amounts of acorns, which the natives in
40:25 amounts of acorns, which the natives in Orange County in this area used to use.
40:27 Orange County in this area used to use.
40:27 Orange County in this area used to use. They would grind them up, basically turn
40:30 They would grind them up, basically turn
40:30 They would grind them up, basically turn them into a kind of flour
40:32 them into a kind of flour
40:32 them into a kind of flour they could make food from. And I'm being
40:34 they could make food from. And I'm being
40:34 they could make food from. And I'm being careful stomping around here, not just
40:36 careful stomping around here, not just
40:36 careful stomping around here, not just cuz of the bombs, cuz some other people
40:37 cuz of the bombs, cuz some other people
40:37 cuz of the bombs, cuz some other people walking up the trail warned me that
40:38 walking up the trail warned me that
40:39 walking up the trail warned me that they've seen a couple of rattlesnakes on
40:40 they've seen a couple of rattlesnakes on
40:40 they've seen a couple of rattlesnakes on the trail down here today. But in and
40:41 the trail down here today. But in and
40:42 the trail down here today. But in and among this very flat area down here
40:45 among this very flat area down here
40:45 among this very flat area down here to which this trail has been preserved,
40:47 to which this trail has been preserved,
40:47 to which this trail has been preserved, so
40:48 so
40:48 so you know, very possibly a contender for
40:51 you know, very possibly a contender for
40:51 you know, very possibly a contender for the village site. Look at the size
40:55 the village site. Look at the size
40:55 the village site. Look at the size of these amazing ancient oak trees. And
40:59 of these amazing ancient oak trees. And
40:59 of these amazing ancient oak trees. And they have an old man oak tree that they
41:00 they have an old man oak tree that they
41:00 they have an old man oak tree that they know was there in 1810 down in the Los
41:03 know was there in 1810 down in the Los
41:03 know was there in 1810 down in the Los Rios district by the mission. So, a
41:05 Rios district by the mission. So, a
41:05 Rios district by the mission. So, a witness tree to all of the events that
41:07 witness tree to all of the events that
41:07 witness tree to all of the events that we're talking about this, no doubt. Just
41:09 we're talking about this, no doubt. Just
41:09 we're talking about this, no doubt. Just from the sheer size of it. I mean, that
41:11 from the sheer size of it. I mean, that
41:11 from the sheer size of it. I mean, that is four times as thick
41:14 is four times as thick
41:14 is four times as thick as I am right there, that tree. No doubt
41:17 as I am right there, that tree. No doubt
41:17 as I am right there, that tree. No doubt this tree right here
41:20 this tree right here
41:20 this tree right here was a witness
41:22 was a witness
41:22 was a witness to the fear, the hushed tones, the
41:25 to the fear, the hushed tones, the
41:25 to the fear, the hushed tones, the livestock being driven up here, the
41:27 livestock being driven up here, the
41:27 livestock being driven up here, the uncertainty, the dread, the fear for
41:30 uncertainty, the dread, the fear for
41:30 uncertainty, the dread, the fear for their lives from pirates that the
41:32 their lives from pirates that the
41:32 their lives from pirates that the refugees would have experienced right
41:34 refugees would have experienced right
41:34 refugees would have experienced right here in this area. Now, the other day,
41:35 here in this area. Now, the other day,
41:35 here in this area. Now, the other day, by the way, I did go up the creek as far
41:38 by the way, I did go up the creek as far
41:38 by the way, I did go up the creek as far as I could. Uh there's a lot of trails
41:40 as I could. Uh there's a lot of trails
41:40 as I could. Uh there's a lot of trails closed off for habitat restoration right
41:43 closed off for habitat restoration right
41:43 closed off for habitat restoration right here in this particular area. I didn't
41:44 here in this particular area. I didn't
41:44 here in this particular area. I didn't find any signs of grinding stones out
41:47 find any signs of grinding stones out
41:47 find any signs of grinding stones out here, but there are rumors that there
41:49 here, but there are rumors that there
41:49 here, but there are rumors that there are some right down here in this area.
41:50 are some right down here in this area.
41:51 are some right down here in this area. But then again, with the bomb threat
41:52 But then again, with the bomb threat
41:52 But then again, with the bomb threat sign and the rattlesnakes, I wasn't
41:54 sign and the rattlesnakes, I wasn't
41:54 sign and the rattlesnakes, I wasn't drifting too far off the path. This is
41:57 drifting too far off the path. This is
41:57 drifting too far off the path. This is incredible. You got to think about this
41:58 incredible. You got to think about this
41:58 incredible. You got to think about this in a different way. Oh, nice little
42:00 in a different way. Oh, nice little
42:00 in a different way. Oh, nice little tranquil weird little niche spot. No,
42:01 tranquil weird little niche spot. No,
42:01 tranquil weird little niche spot. No, this was the site not only of an
42:03 this was the site not only of an
42:03 this was the site not only of an original Native American village and
42:05 original Native American village and
42:05 original Native American village and then one of the earliest European sort
42:08 then one of the earliest European sort
42:08 then one of the earliest European sort of satellite settlements to the
42:09 of satellite settlements to the
42:09 of satellite settlements to the missions, but also a literal refugee
42:12 missions, but also a literal refugee
42:12 missions, but also a literal refugee camp where people were fleeing from
42:15 camp where people were fleeing from
42:15 camp where people were fleeing from actual pirates 20 or 30 minutes
42:18 actual pirates 20 or 30 minutes
42:18 actual pirates 20 or 30 minutes down the freeway from Disneyland. Now,
42:20 down the freeway from Disneyland. Now,
42:20 down the freeway from Disneyland. Now, that is crazy. Anyway, the padre sent
42:23 that is crazy. Anyway, the padre sent
42:23 that is crazy. Anyway, the padre sent the first wave of evacuees up here as
42:25 the first wave of evacuees up here as
42:25 the first wave of evacuees up here as far as we can tell on the night of the
42:26 far as we can tell on the night of the
42:26 far as we can tell on the night of the 14th. I may be getting some of this
42:28 14th. I may be getting some of this
42:28 14th. I may be getting some of this timeline wrong. It's not that clearly
42:30 timeline wrong. It's not that clearly
42:30 timeline wrong. It's not that clearly documented, at least in the sources I
42:32 documented, at least in the sources I
42:32 documented, at least in the sources I was able to pull together, but more
42:35 was able to pull together, but more
42:35 was able to pull together, but more would be on the way, and they'd be on
42:36 would be on the way, and they'd be on
42:36 would be on the way, and they'd be on the way very soon. The padres may have
42:39 the way very soon. The padres may have
42:39 the way very soon. The padres may have stuck it out at the mission that night,
42:41 stuck it out at the mission that night,
42:41 stuck it out at the mission that night, but that wouldn't be the case the next
42:44 but that wouldn't be the case the next
42:44 but that wouldn't be the case the next day. The Trabuco Adobe
42:46 day. The Trabuco Adobe
42:46 day. The Trabuco Adobe would see even more refugees
42:49 would see even more refugees
42:49 would see even more refugees very soon.
42:50 very soon.
42:51 very soon. It's a good shot.
42:52 It's a good shot.

43:29 boot, mobile cannons, field pieces. And
43:29 boot, mobile cannons, field pieces. And just as the sky was beginning to lighten
43:30 just as the sky was beginning to lighten
43:30 just as the sky was beginning to lighten around 5:00, 6:00 in the morning, as
43:33 around 5:00, 6:00 in the morning, as
43:33 around 5:00, 6:00 in the morning, as Corney's invading pirate force is
43:35 Corney's invading pirate force is
43:35 Corney's invading pirate force is forming up here on the beach, Art
43:37 forming up here on the beach, Art
43:37 forming up here on the beach, Art Agüello, who's up here in the hills with
43:39 Agüello, who's up here in the hills with
43:39 Agüello, who's up here in the hills with his men, decides to send those of his
43:41 his men, decides to send those of his
43:41 his men, decides to send those of his men who are mounted, right, his cavalry,
43:43 men who are mounted, right, his cavalry,
43:43 men who are mounted, right, his cavalry, down to the beach for a show of force.
43:46 down to the beach for a show of force.
43:46 down to the beach for a show of force. Dude, looking around here today, you
43:48 Dude, looking around here today, you
43:48 Dude, looking around here today, you would never imagine that this was the
43:49 would never imagine that this was the
43:49 would never imagine that this was the actual site of a pirates versus the
43:52 actual site of a pirates versus the
43:52 actual site of a pirates versus the Spanish battle. People come from all
43:54 Spanish battle. People come from all
43:54 Spanish battle. People come from all around the world to go just a couple of
43:55 around the world to go just a couple of
43:55 around the world to go just a couple of miles up the freeway to Disneyland to
43:57 miles up the freeway to Disneyland to
43:57 miles up the freeway to Disneyland to watch the Spanish and the pirates duke
43:59 watch the Spanish and the pirates duke
43:59 watch the Spanish and the pirates duke it out, but it actually happened right
44:01 it out, but it actually happened right
44:01 it out, but it actually happened right down here at Dana Point, and very
44:03 down here at Dana Point, and very
44:03 down here at Dana Point, and very probably right in this area of Doheny
44:06 probably right in this area of Doheny
44:06 probably right in this area of Doheny Beach, which you can see now it's got
44:08 Beach, which you can see now it's got
44:08 Beach, which you can see now it's got like tiki huts and bars and surfers,
44:10 like tiki huts and bars and surfers,
44:10 like tiki huts and bars and surfers, people peacefully playing volleyball or
44:12 people peacefully playing volleyball or
44:12 people peacefully playing volleyball or laying out in their bikinis. But, this
44:14 laying out in their bikinis. But, this
44:14 laying out in their bikinis. But, this is where the Spanish defenders decided
44:16 is where the Spanish defenders decided
44:16 is where the Spanish defenders decided to make their show of resistance. And
44:18 to make their show of resistance. And
44:18 to make their show of resistance. And all I can think is Peter Corney is down
44:20 all I can think is Peter Corney is down
44:20 all I can think is Peter Corney is down here with 140 guys. Back then without
44:22 here with 140 guys. Back then without
44:22 here with 140 guys. Back then without all the landscaping, the trees, the
44:24 all the landscaping, the trees, the
44:24 all the landscaping, the trees, the condominiums, the Costco, they could
44:26 condominiums, the Costco, they could
44:26 condominiums, the Costco, they could probably easily see the handful of
44:29 probably easily see the handful of
44:29 probably easily see the handful of mounted men the Spanish were sending
44:30 mounted men the Spanish were sending
44:30 mounted men the Spanish were sending down to meet them riding their horses
44:32 down to meet them riding their horses
44:32 down to meet them riding their horses towards them. They must have been
44:33 towards them. They must have been
44:33 towards them. They must have been thinking, "What the heck is this?" As a
44:36 thinking, "What the heck is this?" As a
44:36 thinking, "What the heck is this?" As a matter of fact, let's listen to Peter
44:37 matter of fact, let's listen to Peter
44:37 matter of fact, let's listen to Peter Corney's own words. "At daylight, we
44:39 Corney's own words. "At daylight, we
44:39 Corney's own words. "At daylight, we landed about 140 men. The enemy appeared
44:42 landed about 140 men. The enemy appeared
44:42 landed about 140 men. The enemy appeared with a body of cavalry, and after firing
44:44 with a body of cavalry, and after firing
44:44 with a body of cavalry, and after firing a few shots, retreated." Now, I'm sure
44:46 a few shots, retreated." Now, I'm sure
44:46 a few shots, retreated." Now, I'm sure to the Spanish defenders, a handful of
44:48 to the Spanish defenders, a handful of
44:48 to the Spanish defenders, a handful of them riding down here against the force
44:50 them riding down here against the force
44:50 them riding down here against the force of 140 guys, five times their total
44:52 of 140 guys, five times their total
44:52 of 140 guys, five times their total forces number basically, seemed very
44:54 forces number basically, seemed very
44:54 forces number basically, seemed very brave and very bold. But, clearly the
44:56 brave and very bold. But, clearly the
44:56 brave and very bold. But, clearly the Argentinians who saw this handful of
44:58 Argentinians who saw this handful of
44:58 Argentinians who saw this handful of madmen coming down at them, fire off a
45:01 madmen coming down at them, fire off a
45:01 madmen coming down at them, fire off a few shots, pepper a few balls into the
45:03 few shots, pepper a few balls into the
45:03 few shots, pepper a few balls into the air, and then speed off. impressed, nor
45:06 air, and then speed off. impressed, nor
45:06 air, and then speed off. impressed, nor were they deterred. Pirates were
45:08 were they deterred. Pirates were
45:08 were they deterred. Pirates were officially on the ground in the future
45:10 officially on the ground in the future
45:10 officially on the ground in the future Orange County, and they were on a
45:12 Orange County, and they were on a
45:12 Orange County, and they were on a mission to raid the mission. In 1818
45:15 mission to raid the mission. In 1818
45:15 mission to raid the mission. In 1818 terms, they did not have far to go, just
45:17 terms, they did not have far to go, just
45:17 terms, they did not have far to go, just 3 mi or so up the creek, up the El
45:20 3 mi or so up the creek, up the El
45:20 3 mi or so up the creek, up the El Camino Real, the King's Highway. The
45:22 Camino Real, the King's Highway. The
45:22 Camino Real, the King's Highway. The Spanish were in absolutely no position
45:25 Spanish were in absolutely no position
45:25 Spanish were in absolutely no position to defend the mission or its stores, and
45:27 to defend the mission or its stores, and
45:27 to defend the mission or its stores, and the pirates knew it. The only question
45:29 the pirates knew it. The only question
45:29 the pirates knew it. The only question was, what were they going to find when
45:32 was, what were they going to find when
45:32 was, what were they going to find when they got there? Well, anyway, it finally
45:34 they got there? Well, anyway, it finally
45:34 they got there? Well, anyway, it finally happened. It's the skirmish between the
45:36 happened. It's the skirmish between the
45:36 happened. It's the skirmish between the Spanish and the pirates, and the pirates
45:38 Spanish and the pirates, and the pirates
45:38 Spanish and the pirates, and the pirates were on their way. Arguello's men made
45:41 were on their way. Arguello's men made
45:41 were on their way. Arguello's men made their way back up to the mission to give
45:43 their way back up to the mission to give
45:43 their way back up to the mission to give a final warning to any stragglers left
45:46 a final warning to any stragglers left
45:46 a final warning to any stragglers left behind who immediately evacuated up
45:49 behind who immediately evacuated up
45:49 behind who immediately evacuated up Trabuco Creek with the rest of the
45:51 Trabuco Creek with the rest of the
45:51 Trabuco Creek with the rest of the mission population. With a force so
45:53 mission population. With a force so
45:53 mission population. With a force so small, Arguello wisely decided that
45:55 small, Arguello wisely decided that
45:55 small, Arguello wisely decided that rather than staying and actually
45:56 rather than staying and actually
45:56 rather than staying and actually defending the mission walls themselves,
45:59 defending the mission walls themselves,
45:59 defending the mission walls themselves, his men would retreat on top of a nearby
46:01 his men would retreat on top of a nearby
46:01 his men would retreat on top of a nearby hill where they could keep an eye on the
46:03 hill where they could keep an eye on the
46:03 hill where they could keep an eye on the pirates and what they did without being,
46:05 pirates and what they did without being,
46:05 pirates and what they did without being, you know, absolutely massacred. It took
46:07 you know, absolutely massacred. It took
46:07 you know, absolutely massacred. It took a while for the pirates to get organized
46:09 a while for the pirates to get organized
46:09 a while for the pirates to get organized and march themselves the two or three
46:11 and march themselves the two or three
46:11 and march themselves the two or three miles up Camino Capistrano to the
46:14 miles up Camino Capistrano to the

46:21 mission itself with 140 guys plus two field pieces, the two cannons, one of
46:23 field pieces, the two cannons, one of

46:24 which they set up right in the middle of
46:24 which they set up right in the middle of the El Camino Real pointing up at the
46:27 the El Camino Real pointing up at the
46:27 the El Camino Real pointing up at the hill up towards Arguello's men. And the
46:28 hill up towards Arguello's men. And the
46:29 hill up towards Arguello's men. And the other inside of the mission walls on top
46:31 other inside of the mission walls on top
46:31 other inside of the mission walls on top of a pile of rubble here in front of the
46:34 of a pile of rubble here in front of the

46:41 met any resistance from that quarter.
46:41 met any resistance from that quarter. Now, the great stone church back then,
46:44 Now, the great stone church back then,
46:44 Now, the great stone church back then, as it is today, is the biggest landmark
46:46 as it is today, is the biggest landmark

46:57 beautiful and scenic out here these
46:57 beautiful and scenic out here these days, it's hard to imagine, but in 1818
47:00 days, it's hard to imagine, but in 1818
47:00 days, it's hard to imagine, but in 1818 Peter Corney and 140 of his men, well,
47:03 Peter Corney and 140 of his men, well,
47:03 Peter Corney and 140 of his men, well, really Bouchard's men, who were
47:04 really Bouchard's men, who were
47:04 really Bouchard's men, who were comprised of people from all over the
47:06 comprised of people from all over the
47:06 comprised of people from all over the world, like I said, Filipinos and native
47:08 world, like I said, Filipinos and native
47:08 world, like I said, Filipinos and native Hawaiians, Europeans, Creoles,

47:12 Frenchmen, Spaniards, armed to the teeth, stir-crazy from so many weeks
47:15 teeth, stir-crazy from so many weeks
47:15 teeth, stir-crazy from so many weeks aboard, and probably a little peeved
47:18 aboard, and probably a little peeved
47:18 aboard, and probably a little peeved from Arguello's sassy reply to their
47:20 from Arguello's sassy reply to their
47:20 from Arguello's sassy reply to their demands, not to mention the little
47:22 demands, not to mention the little
47:22 demands, not to mention the little attack on the beach that morning, were
47:23 attack on the beach that morning, were
47:23 attack on the beach that morning, were right here gathered in front of the old
47:26 right here gathered in front of the old
47:26 right here gathered in front of the old stone church ready to do some raiding,
47:28 stone church ready to do some raiding,
47:28 stone church ready to do some raiding, and that's exactly what they did. Now,
47:31 and that's exactly what they did. Now,
47:31 and that's exactly what they did. Now, Bouchard had warned them, just as he had
47:33 Bouchard had warned them, just as he had
47:33 Bouchard had warned them, just as he had in Monterey, to leave the church alone,
47:36 in Monterey, to leave the church alone,
47:36 in Monterey, to leave the church alone, which was not the giant stone chapel
47:38 which was not the giant stone chapel
47:38 which was not the giant stone chapel here, that had already fallen down, like
47:39 here, that had already fallen down, like
47:39 here, that had already fallen down, like I said, but the smaller original chapel
47:41 I said, but the smaller original chapel
47:41 I said, but the smaller original chapel that's still here, the Serra Chapel. He
47:43 that's still here, the Serra Chapel. He
47:43 that's still here, the Serra Chapel. He knew that if he was going to get the
47:44 knew that if he was going to get the
47:44 knew that if he was going to get the local Californios to rebel against
47:47 local Californios to rebel against
47:47 local Californios to rebel against Spain, it was probably not a good idea
47:49 Spain, it was probably not a good idea
47:49 Spain, it was probably not a good idea to attack the actual church sanctuaries
47:51 to attack the actual church sanctuaries
47:51 to attack the actual church sanctuaries themselves. fact, he warned them men not
47:53 themselves. fact, he warned them men not
47:53 themselves. fact, he warned them men not to touch the Serra Chapel on pain of
47:56 to touch the Serra Chapel on pain of
47:56 to touch the Serra Chapel on pain of death. But other than that, of course,
47:57 death. But other than that, of course,
47:57 death. But other than that, of course, they were not only free to, but ordered
47:59 they were not only free to, but ordered
47:59 they were not only free to, but ordered to pillage, plunder, rifle, and loot the
48:01 to pillage, plunder, rifle, and loot the
48:01 to pillage, plunder, rifle, and loot the mission for anything they could find.
48:03 mission for anything they could find.
48:03 mission for anything they could find. And if they were lucky, even drink up,
48:05 And if they were lucky, even drink up,
48:05 And if they were lucky, even drink up, me hearties, yo ho. Now, one of the
48:07 me hearties, yo ho. Now, one of the
48:07 me hearties, yo ho. Now, one of the first buildings they encountered was, of
48:08 first buildings they encountered was, of
48:08 first buildings they encountered was, of course, the soldiers' barracks. And keep
48:10 course, the soldiers' barracks. And keep
48:10 course, the soldiers' barracks. And keep in mind, there was no time to lose, no
48:12 in mind, there was no time to lose, no
48:12 in mind, there was no time to lose, no time to waste. So, immediately, this
48:13 time to waste. So, immediately, this
48:14 time to waste. So, immediately, this place was overrun by crazed, hungry,
48:16 place was overrun by crazed, hungry,
48:16 place was overrun by crazed, hungry, bloodthirsty pirates. And anything that
48:18 bloodthirsty pirates. And anything that
48:18 bloodthirsty pirates. And anything that was left behind in terms of weapons,
48:20 was left behind in terms of weapons,
48:20 was left behind in terms of weapons, clothing, or personal items were
48:21 clothing, or personal items were
48:22 clothing, or personal items were snatched up quicker than you can say
48:24 snatched up quicker than you can say
48:24 snatched up quicker than you can say "Honi soit qui mal y pense." So, the
48:25 "Honi soit qui mal y pense." So, the
48:25 "Honi soit qui mal y pense." So, the padres had actually locked up the
48:27 padres had actually locked up the
48:27 padres had actually locked up the mission, by that I mean locked all the
48:28 mission, by that I mean locked all the
48:28 mission, by that I mean locked all the doors behind them. But, the pirates
48:30 doors behind them. But, the pirates
48:30 doors behind them. But, the pirates simply took their guns, blasted off the
48:32 simply took their guns, blasted off the
48:32 simply took their guns, blasted off the locks, and made their way into every
48:34 locks, and made their way into every
48:34 locks, and made their way into every room in the facility. Again, grabbing at
48:36 room in the facility. Again, grabbing at
48:36 room in the facility. Again, grabbing at anything left behind. And by the way,
48:38 anything left behind. And by the way,
48:38 anything left behind. And by the way, this includes even the padres' quarters.
48:40 this includes even the padres' quarters.
48:40 this includes even the padres' quarters. Even the priests were not safe here.
48:43 Even the priests were not safe here.
48:43 Even the priests were not safe here. Looking around today, you can see a lot
48:44 Looking around today, you can see a lot
48:44 Looking around today, you can see a lot of wear and tear and damage and repairs
48:46 of wear and tear and damage and repairs
48:46 of wear and tear and damage and repairs on those doors over the years. Makes me
48:48 on those doors over the years. Makes me
48:48 on those doors over the years. Makes me wonder if any of that could be original
48:50 wonder if any of that could be original
48:50 wonder if any of that could be original pirate damage. Probably not, but I could
48:53 pirate damage. Probably not, but I could
48:53 pirate damage. Probably not, but I could dream. Now, by this point, like I had
48:54 dream. Now, by this point, like I had
48:54 dream. Now, by this point, like I had mentioned, the padres and everybody else
48:56 mentioned, the padres and everybody else
48:56 mentioned, the padres and everybody else at the mission had fled with everything
48:58 at the mission had fled with everything
48:58 at the mission had fled with everything they could carry, anything of value. So,
49:01 they could carry, anything of value. So,
49:01 they could carry, anything of value. So, by the time the pirates got here, they
49:02 by the time the pirates got here, they
49:02 by the time the pirates got here, they were finding mostly just empty shells,
49:05 were finding mostly just empty shells,
49:05 were finding mostly just empty shells, furniture, maybe some clothing scattered
49:07 furniture, maybe some clothing scattered
49:07 furniture, maybe some clothing scattered around, which only fueled their fire,
49:09 around, which only fueled their fire,
49:09 around, which only fueled their fire, added to their rage, and their
49:11 added to their rage, and their
49:11 added to their rage, and their determination to break into every room
49:12 determination to break into every room
49:12 determination to break into every room to find something, anything of value
49:14 to find something, anything of value
49:14 to find something, anything of value here. Broke into the padres' quarters.
49:16 here. Broke into the padres' quarters.
49:16 here. Broke into the padres' quarters. No doubt they broke into the church, but
49:18 No doubt they broke into the church, but
49:18 No doubt they broke into the church, but didn't touch it. They broke into the
49:19 didn't touch it. They broke into the
49:19 didn't touch it. They broke into the kitchens, the storerooms, and
49:21 kitchens, the storerooms, and
49:21 kitchens, the storerooms, and eventually, the west wing, the
49:23 eventually, the west wing, the
49:23 eventually, the west wing, the warehouses. And this is where the pirate
49:26 warehouses. And this is where the pirate
49:26 warehouses. And this is where the pirate story levels up. Now, today, the
49:28 story levels up. Now, today, the
49:28 story levels up. Now, today, the warehouses have on display some of the
49:30 warehouses have on display some of the
49:30 warehouses have on display some of the mission's treasures, which we should
49:32 mission's treasures, which we should
49:32 mission's treasures, which we should actually go inside and take a look at
49:34 actually go inside and take a look at
49:34 actually go inside and take a look at right quick in the middle of our story.
49:36 right quick in the middle of our story.
49:36 right quick in the middle of our story. These are some of the things that the
49:37 These are some of the things that the
49:38 These are some of the things that the pirates were after, but the fathers had
49:40 pirates were after, but the fathers had
49:40 pirates were after, but the fathers had already removed up Trabuco Canyon and to
49:44 already removed up Trabuco Canyon and to
49:44 already removed up Trabuco Canyon and to safety. Literally, these items here were
49:46 safety. Literally, these items here were
49:46 safety. Literally, these items here were up at that refugee camp. Got quite a bit
49:49 up at that refugee camp. Got quite a bit
49:49 up at that refugee camp. Got quite a bit of silver here to somebody living in
49:51 of silver here to somebody living in
49:52 of silver here to somebody living in 1818, including this silver crucifix
49:55 1818, including this silver crucifix
49:55 1818, including this silver crucifix with a bullet hole in it, but that's a
49:56 with a bullet hole in it, but that's a
49:56 with a bullet hole in it, but that's a story for another time. These very items
49:59 story for another time. These very items
49:59 story for another time. These very items were the ones removed from the mission
50:01 were the ones removed from the mission
50:01 were the ones removed from the mission by the fathers, by the people who lived
50:02 by the fathers, by the people who lived
50:02 by the fathers, by the people who lived here fleeing for safety and kept free
50:05 here fleeing for safety and kept free
50:05 here fleeing for safety and kept free from the taint of pirate hands. Bouchard
50:07 from the taint of pirate hands. Bouchard
50:07 from the taint of pirate hands. Bouchard and his men, even though they were
50:09 and his men, even though they were
50:09 and his men, even though they were supposed to leave the church alone, I'd
50:10 supposed to leave the church alone, I'd
50:10 supposed to leave the church alone, I'd imagine if they found these things, they
50:12 imagine if they found these things, they

52:17 >> Literally, so much wine and so much gin,
52:17 >> Literally, so much wine and so much gin, as they called it, was spilled all over
52:19 as they called it, was spilled all over
52:19 as they called it, was spilled all over the floors. There are stories about
52:21 the floors. There are stories about
52:21 the floors. There are stories about people getting down on all fours and
52:23 people getting down on all fours and
52:23 people getting down on all fours and drinking it up from the floor, where it
52:26 drinking it up from the floor, where it
52:26 drinking it up from the floor, where it was obviously running down into this
52:28 was obviously running down into this
52:28 was obviously running down into this basement, that probably would have had
52:29 basement, that probably would have had
52:29 basement, that probably would have had the big wine cask in it. That's just
52:30 the big wine cask in it. That's just
52:30 the big wine cask in it. That's just speculation on my part. I've never seen
52:31 speculation on my part. I've never seen
52:31 speculation on my part. I've never seen drawings or anything. So, they might
52:32 drawings or anything. So, they might
52:32 drawings or anything. So, they might have been drinking hooch off of that
52:35 have been drinking hooch off of that
52:35 have been drinking hooch off of that very floor, right down there. And
52:37 very floor, right down there. And
52:37 very floor, right down there. And possibly even right underneath where I'm
52:39 possibly even right underneath where I'm
52:39 possibly even right underneath where I'm standing, because we're standing on
52:41 standing, because we're standing on
52:41 standing, because we're standing on another one of those extensions, little
52:43 another one of those extensions, little
52:43 another one of those extensions, little platforms here, right? The foundation.
52:45 platforms here, right? The foundation.
52:45 platforms here, right? The foundation. So, this is where the mission basements
52:47 So, this is where the mission basements
52:47 So, this is where the mission basements were. 140 guys running riot all over
52:49 were. 140 guys running riot all over
52:49 were. 140 guys running riot all over here, finding nothing but corn and food,
52:51 here, finding nothing but corn and food,
52:51 here, finding nothing but corn and food, meat, which, of course, is good, but not
52:52 meat, which, of course, is good, but not
52:52 meat, which, of course, is good, but not great if you're a pirate in search of
52:54 great if you're a pirate in search of
52:54 great if you're a pirate in search of gold, booty, etc., etc. I mean, there
52:56 gold, booty, etc., etc. I mean, there
52:56 gold, booty, etc., etc. I mean, there weren't even any women around inside of
52:58 weren't even any women around inside of
52:58 weren't even any women around inside of the mission when they got here. Thank
52:59 the mission when they got here. Thank
52:59 the mission when they got here. Thank god, of course. But, finally, they had
53:01 god, of course. But, finally, they had
53:02 god, of course. But, finally, they had found hooch. And these guys began to get
53:05 found hooch. And these guys began to get
53:05 found hooch. And these guys began to get hammered. And I'm talking super
53:08 hammered. And I'm talking super
53:08 hammered. And I'm talking super hammered. And the more drunk they got
53:09 hammered. And the more drunk they got
53:10 hammered. And the more drunk they got and the less they found in the mission
53:12 and the less they found in the mission
53:12 and the less they found in the mission to carry away with them to their ships,
53:13 to carry away with them to their ships,
53:13 to carry away with them to their ships, the more angry we got. And that's when
53:16 the more angry we got. And that's when
53:16 the more angry we got. And that's when they began going back through all the
53:18 they began going back through all the
53:18 they began going back through all the mission buildings and smashing up all
53:20 mission buildings and smashing up all
53:20 mission buildings and smashing up all the furniture, piling it up, and
53:22 the furniture, piling it up, and
53:22 the furniture, piling it up, and lighting fire to it. Now, most of the
53:24 lighting fire to it. Now, most of the
53:24 lighting fire to it. Now, most of the mission's buildings were built out of
53:27 mission's buildings were built out of
53:27 mission's buildings were built out of adobe and had these sort of clay or
53:29 adobe and had these sort of clay or
53:29 adobe and had these sort of clay or ceramic tiled roofs, just like the ones
53:32 ceramic tiled roofs, just like the ones
53:32 ceramic tiled roofs, just like the ones you see up here today. So, most of them
53:34 you see up here today. So, most of them
53:34 you see up here today. So, most of them were basically fireproof. So, in terms
53:36 were basically fireproof. So, in terms
53:36 were basically fireproof. So, in terms of burning the mission down, that wasn't
53:38 of burning the mission down, that wasn't
53:38 of burning the mission down, that wasn't really possible, at least for the bulk
53:40 really possible, at least for the bulk
53:40 really possible, at least for the bulk of the buildings out here. Plus, they
53:42 of the buildings out here. Plus, they
53:42 of the buildings out here. Plus, they were told on pain of death not to risk
53:44 were told on pain of death not to risk
53:44 were told on pain of death not to risk the Sarah Chapel, right? However, unlike
53:45 the Sarah Chapel, right? However, unlike
53:45 the Sarah Chapel, right? However, unlike the Sarah Chapel, which is located right
53:47 the Sarah Chapel, which is located right
53:47 the Sarah Chapel, which is located right in front of us, or the Padres quarters
53:50 in front of us, or the Padres quarters
53:50 in front of us, or the Padres quarters over here built out of adobe with those
53:51 over here built out of adobe with those
53:51 over here built out of adobe with those tile roofs, the soldiers barracks had a
53:54 tile roofs, the soldiers barracks had a
53:54 tile roofs, the soldiers barracks had a wooden roof, and those were in fact
53:56 wooden roof, and those were in fact
53:56 wooden roof, and those were in fact burnt up. Now, clearly the barracks were
53:58 burnt up. Now, clearly the barracks were
53:59 burnt up. Now, clearly the barracks were eventually rebuilt, but this is at least
54:00 eventually rebuilt, but this is at least
54:00 eventually rebuilt, but this is at least one structure here we know for sure was
54:03 one structure here we know for sure was
54:03 one structure here we know for sure was burned by pirates. So, picture you got
54:05 burned by pirates. So, picture you got
54:05 burned by pirates. So, picture you got 140 men from all over the world, all
54:07 140 men from all over the world, all
54:07 140 men from all over the world, all different backgrounds, are running
54:08 different backgrounds, are running
54:09 different backgrounds, are running around here like crazy, drunk as a
54:10 around here like crazy, drunk as a
54:11 around here like crazy, drunk as a skunk, rioting through the rooms,
54:12 skunk, rioting through the rooms,
54:12 skunk, rioting through the rooms, through the hallways, drunk and
54:14 through the hallways, drunk and
54:14 through the hallways, drunk and disorderly, and now they're setting fire
54:17 disorderly, and now they're setting fire
54:17 disorderly, and now they're setting fire to buildings like in Pirates of the
54:20 to buildings like in Pirates of the
54:20 to buildings like in Pirates of the Caribbean. I just came back into the
54:21 Caribbean. I just came back into the
54:21 Caribbean. I just came back into the barracks to see if I can see any
54:22 barracks to see if I can see any
54:22 barracks to see if I can see any evidence of damage from said fire, but I
54:25 evidence of damage from said fire, but I
54:25 evidence of damage from said fire, but I don't see any. You see a very modern
54:26 don't see any. You see a very modern
54:26 don't see any. You see a very modern roof up there, and
54:28 roof up there, and
54:28 roof up there, and who knows? I mean, even if they repaired
54:29 who knows? I mean, even if they repaired
54:29 who knows? I mean, even if they repaired this in 1819, it would look old to us
54:31 this in 1819, it would look old to us
54:31 this in 1819, it would look old to us now. Absolutely amazing. These guys were
54:33 now. Absolutely amazing. These guys were
54:33 now. Absolutely amazing. These guys were now running riot all over the mission,
54:35 now running riot all over the mission,
54:35 now running riot all over the mission, smashing stuff, grabbing anything they
54:37 smashing stuff, grabbing anything they
54:37 smashing stuff, grabbing anything they could take, smashing furniture, burning
54:39 could take, smashing furniture, burning
54:39 could take, smashing furniture, burning anything else they couldn't take. In
54:40 anything else they couldn't take. In
54:40 anything else they couldn't take. In fact, apparently Peter Corney and the
54:42 fact, apparently Peter Corney and the
54:42 fact, apparently Peter Corney and the officers had a hard time getting these
54:44 officers had a hard time getting these
54:44 officers had a hard time getting these drunken wild men to focus on gathering
54:46 drunken wild men to focus on gathering
54:46 drunken wild men to focus on gathering up what they could take. But, it wasn't
54:47 up what they could take. But, it wasn't
54:47 up what they could take. But, it wasn't just here inside of the mission that all
54:49 just here inside of the mission that all
54:49 just here inside of the mission that all this was going on, cuz let's not forget
54:51 this was going on, cuz let's not forget
54:51 this was going on, cuz let's not forget about the surrounding town. Actually,
54:54 about the surrounding town. Actually,
54:54 about the surrounding town. Actually, the whole surrounding area was full of
54:56 the whole surrounding area was full of
54:56 the whole surrounding area was full of mission buildings back, and it wasn't
54:57 mission buildings back, and it wasn't
54:57 mission buildings back, and it wasn't just what we have preserved here today.
54:59 just what we have preserved here today.
54:59 just what we have preserved here today. As you notice as we're walking around
55:00 As you notice as we're walking around
55:00 As you notice as we're walking around inside the mission, we haven't talked at
55:02 inside the mission, we haven't talked at
55:02 inside the mission, we haven't talked at all about where the neophytes, the
55:03 all about where the neophytes, the
55:04 all about where the neophytes, the Ajachemen, the Juaneno Indians were
55:05 Ajachemen, the Juaneno Indians were
55:05 Ajachemen, the Juaneno Indians were living. Their dwellings were spread out
55:08 living. Their dwellings were spread out
55:08 living. Their dwellings were spread out all over here. You would have had the
55:10 all over here. You would have had the
55:10 all over here. You would have had the plaza in front of the mission with some
55:12 plaza in front of the mission with some
55:12 plaza in front of the mission with some of the Spanish buildings more down in
55:14 of the Spanish buildings more down in
55:14 of the Spanish buildings more down in the Los Rios historic district. Some of
55:16 the Los Rios historic district. Some of
55:16 the Los Rios historic district. Some of them adobe, but most of them jacales,
55:18 them adobe, but most of them jacales,
55:18 them adobe, but most of them jacales, kind of a mix of mud and reeds, sort of
55:20 kind of a mix of mud and reeds, sort of
55:20 kind of a mix of mud and reeds, sort of similar to adobe built around twigs and
55:22 similar to adobe built around twigs and
55:22 similar to adobe built around twigs and poles, typically with thatched roofs and
55:25 poles, typically with thatched roofs and
55:25 poles, typically with thatched roofs and incredibly
55:26 incredibly
55:26 incredibly flammable. So, the pirates had now
55:28 flammable. So, the pirates had now
55:28 flammable. So, the pirates had now spread out all over the surrounding
55:31 spread out all over the surrounding
55:31 spread out all over the surrounding town, looting everybody's homes, taking
55:33 town, looting everybody's homes, taking
55:33 town, looting everybody's homes, taking their possessions, even those meager
55:34 their possessions, even those meager

55:36 possessions held by the Indians, smashing their furniture, stealing,

55:47 called them, meaning the Spanish European residents living here outside
55:50 European residents living here outside
55:50 European residents living here outside of the mission. And the story goes that
55:51 of the mission. And the story goes that
55:51 of the mission. And the story goes that while some of the mission buildings in
55:53 while some of the mission buildings in
55:53 while some of the mission buildings in the town of San Juan Capistrano were

56:24 seen the smoke rising from 8 miles down the canyon in San Juan Capistrano. You
56:27 the canyon in San Juan Capistrano. You

56:29 can only imagine how much more dread and
56:29 can only imagine how much more dread and fear came upon everybody camped up here
56:32 fear came upon everybody camped up here
56:32 fear came upon everybody camped up here when they realized that not just their
56:34 when they realized that not just their

56:44 being destroyed, but also, for all they
56:44 being destroyed, but also, for all they knew, maybe even the mission itself,
56:46 knew, maybe even the mission itself,
56:46 knew, maybe even the mission itself, maybe even their holy church. And let's
56:48 maybe even their holy church. And let's
56:48 maybe even their holy church. And let's not forget, they would have considered
56:50 not forget, they would have considered
56:50 not forget, they would have considered it very holy, very sacred. The
56:53 it very holy, very sacred. The
56:53 it very holy, very sacred. The destruction of the church would
56:54 destruction of the church would
56:54 destruction of the church would potentially be just as traumatic to all
56:56 potentially be just as traumatic to all
56:56 potentially be just as traumatic to all the people staying up here as any of
56:58 the people staying up here as any of
56:58 the people staying up here as any of their actual household property itself.

1:04:12 the basement awash with liquor. One at a time or separately, we don't really
1:04:13 time or separately, we don't really
1:04:13 time or separately, we don't really know, they got down here and were
1:04:16 know, they got down here and were
1:04:16 know, they got down here and were drinking some of the liquor pulled up in
1:04:19 drinking some of the liquor pulled up in
1:04:19 drinking some of the liquor pulled up in the basement. I was told that they lay
1:04:20 the basement. I was told that they lay
1:04:20 the basement. I was told that they lay down on the ground and just drank their
1:04:22 down on the ground and just drank their
1:04:22 down on the ground and just drank their fill. And keep in mind, like uh many
1:04:24 fill. And keep in mind, like uh many
1:04:24 fill. And keep in mind, like uh many other Native American peoples, they
1:04:26 other Native American peoples, they
1:04:26 other Native American peoples, they really had no native liquor, right? They
1:04:29 really had no native liquor, right? They
1:04:29 really had no native liquor, right? They didn't have a lot of resistance or a big
1:04:30 didn't have a lot of resistance or a big
1:04:30 didn't have a lot of resistance or a big tolerance for liquor and working and
1:04:32 tolerance for liquor and working and
1:04:32 tolerance for liquor and working and living here at the mission, they would
1:04:33 living here at the mission, they would
1:04:33 living here at the mission, they would have never had access to the wine or the
1:04:36 have never had access to the wine or the
1:04:36 have never had access to the wine or the aguardiente, which like I said was a lot
1:04:38 aguardiente, which like I said was a lot
1:04:38 aguardiente, which like I said was a lot more like moonshine. It was strong
1:04:39 more like moonshine. It was strong
1:04:39 more like moonshine. It was strong stuff. So, sadly, they drank themselves
1:04:42 stuff. So, sadly, they drank themselves
1:04:42 stuff. So, sadly, they drank themselves to death. This is something the padres

1:04:57 have come back with you. We don't know when this happened." Actually, in the
1:04:58 when this happened." Actually, in the
1:04:58 when this happened." Actually, in the aftermath of the whole thing, there was
1:05:00 aftermath of the whole thing, there was
1:05:00 aftermath of the whole thing, there was a big contention. The defenders blamed
1:05:03 a big contention. The defenders blamed
1:05:03 a big contention. The defenders blamed the padres for not giving them more men
1:05:05 the padres for not giving them more men
1:05:05 the padres for not giving them more men or Indians to defend the mission or
1:05:07 or Indians to defend the mission or
1:05:07 or Indians to defend the mission or horses. Padres thought, "Obviously, the

1:05:12 put up any real show of resistance." so
1:05:12 put up any real show of resistance." so they blame them for a lot of the
1:05:13 they blame them for a lot of the
1:05:13 they blame them for a lot of the pillaging, the looting, and the burning,
1:05:16 pillaging, the looting, and the burning,
1:05:16 pillaging, the looting, and the burning, and such like. But, that's politics,
1:05:17 and such like. But, that's politics,
1:05:17 and such like. But, that's politics, right? That's the way that it goes. I
1:05:19 right? That's the way that it goes. I

1:05:43 alcohol and the sadness, there were a
1:05:43 alcohol and the sadness, there were a few casualties of the battle. Well,
1:05:45 few casualties of the battle. Well,
1:05:45 few casualties of the battle. Well, battle is stretching it a little bit. Of
1:05:47 battle is stretching it a little bit. Of

1:06:02 couldn't leave, and then when they got
1:06:02 couldn't leave, and then when they got caught in here, maybe they made that as
1:06:03 caught in here, maybe they made that as
1:06:03 caught in here, maybe they made that as an excuse. And look at this place, it's
1:06:04 an excuse. And look at this place, it's

1:14:08 whatever it's called, down in Dana Point, right where Bouchard and his men
1:14:11 Point, right where Bouchard and his men
1:14:11 Point, right where Bouchard and his men were laying off the coast, right where
1:14:13 were laying off the coast, right where
1:14:13 were laying off the coast, right where they rode to attack the mission, and
1:14:14 they rode to attack the mission, and
1:14:14 they rode to attack the mission, and then of course returned to their boats
1:14:16 then of course returned to their boats
1:14:16 then of course returned to their boats with the with meager supplies they did
1:14:17 with the with meager supplies they did
1:14:17 with the with meager supplies they did bring back, there is absolutely no
1:14:19 bring back, there is absolutely no
1:14:19 bring back, there is absolutely no marker that I can find. No plaque, no
1:14:22 marker that I can find. No plaque, no
1:14:22 marker that I can find. No plaque, no nothing. You'd figure there'd be a
1:14:23 nothing. You'd figure there'd be a
1:14:23 nothing. You'd figure there'd be a freaking statue of Bouchard out here. I
1:14:26 freaking statue of Bouchard out here. I
1:14:26 freaking statue of Bouchard out here. I mean, he was a freaking pirate. There's
1:14:27 mean, he was a freaking pirate. There's
1:14:27 mean, he was a freaking pirate. There's no evidence Bouchard himself came
1:14:29 no evidence Bouchard himself came
1:14:29 no evidence Bouchard himself came ashore, but Peter Corney and the the
1:14:31 ashore, but Peter Corney and the the
1:14:31 ashore, but Peter Corney and the the rest of the gang, they came up right
1:14:32 rest of the gang, they came up right
1:14:32 rest of the gang, they came up right onto this beach. Dude, if I was in
1:14:35 onto this beach. Dude, if I was in
1:14:35 onto this beach. Dude, if I was in charge of Dana Point, and I said I am
1:14:36 charge of Dana Point, and I said I am
1:14:36 charge of Dana Point, and I said I am certainly not, I would have definitely
1:14:38 certainly not, I would have definitely
1:14:38 certainly not, I would have definitely put some kind of monument, some kind of
1:14:40 put some kind of monument, some kind of
1:14:40 put some kind of monument, some kind of plaque. Freaking pirates. Anyway, now
1:14:42 plaque. Freaking pirates. Anyway, now
1:14:42 plaque. Freaking pirates. Anyway, now there are legends, my friends. Legends
1:14:45 there are legends, my friends. Legends
1:14:46 there are legends, my friends. Legends about all the supplies that the pirates
1:14:47 about all the supplies that the pirates
1:14:48 about all the supplies that the pirates left scattered along the road back down
1:14:50 left scattered along the road back down
1:14:50 left scattered along the road back down to the beach. Legend that they did drop
1:14:52 to the beach. Legend that they did drop
1:14:52 to the beach. Legend that they did drop valuables and candlesticks and things
1:14:54 valuables and candlesticks and things
1:14:54 valuables and candlesticks and things like that along their path. So, I guess
1:14:56 like that along their path. So, I guess
1:14:56 like that along their path. So, I guess it's theoretically possible that there
1:14:58 it's theoretically possible that there
1:14:58 it's theoretically possible that there is some sacked mission treasure buried
1:15:01 is some sacked mission treasure buried
1:15:01 is some sacked mission treasure buried along the roadside or along the creek or
1:15:03 along the roadside or along the creek or
1:15:03 along the roadside or along the creek or maybe even washed out here into the bay.
1:15:06 maybe even washed out here into the bay.
1:15:06 maybe even washed out here into the bay. And there's even stronger local legends
1:15:08 And there's even stronger local legends
1:15:08 And there's even stronger local legends and local folklore about what the padres
1:15:10 and local folklore about what the padres
1:15:10 and local folklore about what the padres left up at the Trabuco Adobe and in
1:15:13 left up at the Trabuco Adobe and in
1:15:13 left up at the Trabuco Adobe and in Trabuco Canyon. We'll have to save that
1:15:15 Trabuco Canyon. We'll have to save that
1:15:16 Trabuco Canyon. We'll have to save that for another time. Anyway, this is where
1:15:17 for another time. Anyway, this is where
1:15:17 for another time. Anyway, this is where they came, right here,
1:15:19 they came, right here,
1:15:19 they came, right here, to row back to their ship. Just trying
1:15:21 to row back to their ship. Just trying
1:15:21 to row back to their ship. Just trying to imagine Bouchard's face when all his
1:15:23 to imagine Bouchard's face when all his
1:15:23 to imagine Bouchard's face when all his men start climbing back aboard the boats
1:15:25 men start climbing back aboard the boats
1:15:25 men start climbing back aboard the boats totally drunk with barely anything to
1:15:27 totally drunk with barely anything to
1:15:27 totally drunk with barely anything to show for themselves. He was probably not

1:15:44 much, but they didn't give a hoot once
1:15:44 much, but they didn't give a hoot once they broke into the hooch. Ho. Yo, ho.
1:15:48 they broke into the hooch. Ho. Yo, ho.
1:15:48 they broke into the hooch. Ho. Yo, ho. Heave yo. Oh, the pirates were here
1:15:51 Heave yo. Oh, the pirates were here
1:15:51 Heave yo. Oh, the pirates were here doing things. No pirates now, just a
