The Devil's Crossroads - Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and the Birthplace of the Delta Blues
THE BLUES. Although this word is many things to many people; for most, it is synonymous with the Delta Blues that inspired countless Rocknroll legends: From Clapton to The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry to Elvis, the list is endless. The roots of Rocknroll are in the Mississippi Delta.
There are countless blues players from the region; Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson, Son House, Johnny Shines, Charley Patton, Robert Lockwood and perhaps most legendary, Robert Johnson.
Although somewhat insignificant in his own time the Legend of Robert Johnson has grown to massive proportions thanks to his influence on Rock and Roll guitar playing. Some say he’s the greatest guitar player that ever lived, others say he sold his soul to the Devil at the crossroads.
In today’s video, thanks to the bad weather up north, we visit The Devils crossroads, the site of Muddy Waters plantation house and recordings. We visit Clarksdale MS, home of Ground Zero Blues club and the Delta Blues Museum, then down to Dockery Farms, home of Charley Patton and Howlin Wolf and often considered the true birthplace of the Delta Blues - next we dive down deep into the Robert Johnson legend by visiting the site most experts now believe he was buried after being given poisoned whiskey.
This is not meant to be an extensive history of the blues, or an exhaustive tour of all the important blues or other African American delta heritage places. Instead you’re coming along on an impromptu, haphazard bucket list visit to some of the places (that as a fan) I have always wanted to see in the Delta - just in case I can’t get back for awhile. BUT! Along the way I hope enough history has been popped in that if you don’t know much about the Delta blues you decide to check it out!
The Mississippi Delta region is full of history both tragic and triumphant, and while the blues is known for being somewhat mournful, it’s also full of hope and humor - an important sound from a different time and place, a time of great transition for the thousands upon thousands of people who, before mechanized farm equipment, worked the land by the sweat of their brows and cut loose with a music that has become a cornerstone for nearly every popular American style to come ever since.
I highly recommend visiting the Delta Blues Museum and the Mississippi Delta region. In addition to the Blues highway sites, there are also important civil rights locations and Mississippi freedom trail sites. It’s quite a place and I can’t wait to go back.
For more on the Blues, check out this great documentary https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5qq_qnLHf74 - another good resource BOOK wise is Escaping the Delta by Elijah Wald, DEEP BLUES by Robert Palmer, etc.
To help preserve some of these historic African American cemeteries, stories, and music history, consider supporting the Mount Zion memorial fund https://www.mtzionmemorialfund.org/p/endangered-and-abandoned-cemeteries-in.html?m=1
